DVD Verdict Review - The Short Films Of David Lynch
Such an auteur is David Lynch, who in the thirty plus years that he has been working in film, consistently offers disquieting visions of a world split in two, a land where nightmares and hallucinations co-mingle and intermarry with daydreams and the mundane.
He has masterminded a series of short films, unlike no one before or since, that manage to capture the fleeting, uneasy mental moments of twilight sleep, when the mind is alive and drifting with ghosts from the invisible world, and anxieties from the real one.
David Lynch is declared a genius by this court, and acquitted of any and all charges of confusion, artistic pretension or insanity.

On a (paid) members-only site, Lynch creates original content for www.davidlynch.com, including a short film series, crude animations, ambient/art-installation style film experiments, and various other odds and ends that find their perfect outlet on the internet.
The films could be only 55 seconds long (due to the small amount of film the camera could hold), use only natural light and no sync sound, and be completed in only one take (with only three attempts allowed).
As on the "Short Films" disc, Lynch sits at his microphone, reminiscing on the long production of his film and the collaborators who stuck with him for the entire time (save original cinematographer Herbert Cardwell, who was replaced by Fred Elmes one year in).

Lynch's short films are important because they are a more potent and unаbridgеd form of his style and work--he has a lоt more freedom with the form, and thus can do basically whatever comes to mind, versus making things fеаturе length which also means making them fеаturе-liке.

DVD Savant Review: The Short Films of David Lynch
Lynch's introductions are mostly plain-spoken autobio stuff, in grainy B&W before a large microphone, as if he were giving testimony in a show trial.
Lynch talks about how he made his first animated film and gives thanks to the art student friends who encouraged him to apply to the AFI for a grant.
Lynch's effort is one of least impressive, consisting of three unconnected vignettes (that don't seem to have been done in one go as per the rules) that come off as fragments.

David Lynch’s textural visual style is particularly enhanced when projected (not for nothing was “Eraserhead,” his 1977 feature debut, considered the last real midnight movie phenomenon), and the screen tonight was a wrinkled white sheet, adding bonus texture.
It is not worth sidestepping, and certainly Lynch never did, that his unsettling early shorts found horror in the body, in gynecology, in sex, and in the family that emerges from these things.
The DVD collection of his short films is completed with Lynch’s contribution to the 1996 collection “Lumière and Company,” in which the hundredth anniversary of cinema was celebrated by offering 40 directors worldwide the opportunity to shoot one minute of film on the original hand cranked camera of the Lumière brothers.

Lynch has always taken a keen interest in crafting unique soundscapes to go with his films, and they are translated to DVD about as well as they ever could given the original recording limitations.

Lynch was notoriously resistant to structure during his tenure at the AFI, claiming ignorance of basic narrative techniques.
It's impossible to "get" a film that's not directed at the part of the head that understands things in a logical context; this is a film that couldn't exist without other films, making it, like the fetal horror that comprises its moral compass, a product of impossible parentage, vulnerable to the most intimate--and futile--of investigations.
The importance of Lynch as an artist is that he seldom tries to impose sense on his pictures, which is not to say that his films are surreal (they're as goofily, ominously straight as Andrew Wyeth or Grant Wood as they are surreal, after all).

eFilmCritic - DVD REVIEW: The Short Films of David Lynch
Lynch seemed to have lost his way: where ERASERHEAD was uncompromisingly authentic in its creation of a nightmare world, his later work was just ineffectually weirded out.
If Lynch’s “vision” carried more force back when he was a struggling art student, then this DVD edition of his early short films, coupled here with a few post-fame efforts, should be of more than just archival interest.
Filmed in a single continuous shot, it has a double-amputee who writes a letter to an acquaintance (recited in voiceover) while a doctor (Lynch) tends to her stumps.
