Vicksburg served as the primary refugee gathering point and temporary housing during the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 which submerged an area of the Mississippi Delta nearly the size of New England.

I was surprised at the amount of things that have be given from families from the North that had been absconded by their forefathers.
Vicksburg, because of the railroad was a very important conquest while just down the river Natchez which had more millionaires than any other city I believe, was left virtually intact and no battles as they weren't important in the war effort.
Some people we know bought a B&B in Vicksburg and soon after the railroad activated a long dead track and now the trains come by their place every 45 minutes and blow their whistles as they cross the streets.
