Silence of the Lambs - Rotten Tomatoes
The Silence of the Lambs is a psychological thriller of the highest order, and well deserving of the unusual Oscar nod for Best Picture, never before bestowed upon a film like this.
For all the unbridled savagery on display, what is shrewd, significant and finally hopeful about Silence of the Lambs is the way it proves that a movie can be mercilessly scary and mercifully humane at the same time.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is one of the most taut, suspenseful, psychological thrillers ever produced.

"Silence of the Lambs" is a case study of how great a film can be when all of the elements come together.
The fact that "Silence of the Lambs" won the top awards and became a huge box office success is a testament to it's strengths as a film.
What a great combination of talent to bring together to explain the process of making "Silence of the Lambs." The commentary was recorded in 1994 for the laserdisc version of the film, but it's just as vital and fascinating today.

The Silence of the Lambs appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 on this single-sided, dual-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
Objectively, this new edition of Lambs seemed to improve upon the older DVD releases; this is the film’s third release in the format, following a 1997 version from Image Entertainment and a 1998 Criterion edition that essentially rehashed a 1994 laserdisc.

The Silence of the Lambs-Probably the most genuinely disturbing psychological thriller ever made, Silence of the Lambs is a must see, but its dramatic power, dark insight into the human psyche, and ugly violence (most of which is implied) ensures it's unlikely you'll watch this film more than once.
Silence Of The Lambs still sends chills down our spines, and engages us in a disturbing world of madness, tinged with cynical humor and engrossing conversations between Hopkins and Foster.
Based on Thomas Harris's novel, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is one of the few thrillers which relies heavily on psychological terror rather than splatter horror and "boo!" scares.

 The Silence of the Lambs
Silence would be one of those great movies that don't win anything.
Silence changed the face of Hollywood thrillers, though it was hardly the first to do what it did -- 1986's Manhunter, also based on a Thomas Harris novel (Red Dragon) and featuring Hannibal Lecter in a much smaller role (played by Brian Cox), laid some of the groundwork.

And thanks to mesmerizing performances across the board, Lambs is not spoiled after its first viewing--during their many scenes together, Foster and Hopkins often stare straight into the camera (a Demme signature that sheds its gimmicky quality here--it's as though his folksiness had been misspent genre technique), hypnotizing us with equal and enduring force.
Propositioned twice (even while investigating the deaths of women who were skinned alive), she handles it the way she handles the plot's myriad uncomfortable encounters: with a cool stare that reveals not so much a naïve willingness to match wits (hers, considerable) as moral strength.

Silence of the Lambs is a film I’ve journeyed into time and time again over the last ten years.
Silence of the Lambs became only the third film in Academy Award history to sweep the top five Oscars (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and a Screenplay award), and it did so with many odds against it.
I had high hopes for the MGM release of Silence, knowing it would be the first DVD version to be anamorphically enhanced, but I didn’t expect it to be this good.

Silence of the Lambs was a film that took me by surprise when it was released in 1991.
Far from the madding crowd of grade-B slasher fests, Lambs powerfully proved that a serial killer movie could be made as a complex and intense tale that relied more on character delineation than dismembered victims.
Silence of the Lambs is a suspenseful, bizarrely horrifying and invigorating look into the minds of two serial killers and those who pursue them.

Silence of the Lambs won the '91 Academy Award for Best Picture, which I find somewhat surprising.

DVD Verdict Review - The Silence Of The Lambs: Special Edition
In fact, Lambs is a fusion of several genres: the detective story (in particular, the police procedural), the horror story (Starling must face the monster and her own fears), and the coming-of-age story.
By focusing attention on Starling, screenwriter Ted Tally and director Jonathan Demme build psychological tension around a central figure whose position throughout the film is precarious: she is a student in danger of failing, a woman in danger of being marginalized by men, an operative of law in danger of being overwhelmed by crime.
MGM has remastered The Silence of the Lambs for this new anamorphic edition (my only major criticism of the Criterion version was its untouched print), which still retains its gritty quality even after the computers have done their job.

Caged Heat (1974), Demme’s first directing effort for Corman, is a woman-in-prison flick that suggests that early on he was aware of the connection between genre bends and gender twists—the connection that is stunningly realized in The Silence of the Lambs.
As exhilarating as it is harrowing, The Silence of the Lambs is a slasher film in which the woman is hero rather than victim, pursuer rather than pursued.
Amazingly fluid, The Silence of the Lambs shifts back and forth from Gothic fantasy to police procedural drama.

Anthony Hopkins was on screen for all of eighteen minutes in his most famous performance as Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lechter in Silence of the Lambs and made the most of it by providing some of the screen's most unforgettable and terrifying images, largely by maintaining a chilling stillness.
But as memorable as Hopkins was in the role, his Oscar win was harshly criticized at the time not only for the brevity of his appearance, but because many felt that it was accomplished as much through clever lighting and editing as anything contributed by the actor.

Lambs is a white-knuckler, with no distractions, about the FBI's stalking of a serial killer who skins female victims.

Even in the final scene, the brief silence is quickly broken by a phone call, which, in terms of a narrative device, turns about to be about as subtle strapping a bullhorn to a lamb's mouth and then sticking a hot cattle prod up its anus.
Using that analogy, 1% of the film is silence, while the rest of it is lamb wailing.
