The Silent Gondoliers (ISBN 0-345-44263-6) is a 1983 novel written by William Goldman, under the pseudonym of S.
The Silent Gondoliers is the lesser-known (but equally wonderful) book written by S.
And in his Venice, that's a problem, because the gondoliers have their reputation as the best singers in the world to uphold.

The SF Site Featured Review: The Silent Gondoliers
Goldman adopts the same persona as the "author" of The Silent Gondoliers, a story of Luigi and his variety of compatriots as he explains why the gondoliers of Venice no longer sing when they ply their trade.
The Silent Gondoliers is rife with tangents and asides which support the main story and add to the humour of the novella as a whole.
This is apparently the first reprint of The Silent Gondoliers since it first appeared in 1983, and while 17 years may be an excessive amount of time to wait for a book to be reprinted, this book is worth the wait and should gather new fans with its wider release.

One talented young gondolier with a "goony" smile, Luigi, is incredibly skilled as a gondolier and wins the heart of the girl he adores.
Nevertheless, Luigi is a sweetie, with his goony smile and obsessions with being a gondolier.
The culmination of that is "The Silent Gondoliers," a very short book--only 110 pages, that bears absolutely no resemblence to "The Princess Bride." I am grateful for this.

 William Goldman:  The Silent Gondoliers
His one inadequacy was his inability to carry a tune, which made him anathema to the other gondoliers in Venice despite his personality.
It was because of this inability that the other gondoliers eventually chose to stop singing.
For all the humor in The Silent Gondoliers, Goldman does have a lot to say about the way legends are maintained by people who have a stake in them.

The only other one in print, as far as I know, is The Silent Gondoliers.
Once again, it has been updated for modern readers by the silvery pen of William Goldman, a fine novelist who is doomed to be better known as a screenwriter. The first version of The Silent Gondoliers I saw did not contain Goldman's name anywhere on the book.
The tale, of gondoliers who suddenly lose their singing voices, is sweet but slight, and it lacks the caustic framing device that provided The Princess Bride with its edge.

Look What I Found In My Brain!: S. Morgenstern
Morgenstern (the "S" stands for Simon) is author William Goldman's whimsical narrator of The Princess Bride and The Silent Gondoliers.
He supposedly lived in Venice to complete his research for The Silent Gondoliers, and his love of baseball makes it obvious he's spent time in the United States.
However, English is not his native language; in a letter to the editors at Del Rey, he wrote of Gondoliers "although I have written in French and German as well as Florinese, this is my first attempt at colloquial English."

William Goldman, the acclaimed screenwriter (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, and Misery) and author of The Princess Bride regales us with another tale from the loquacious S. Morgenstern.
This magical fable tells the story of Luigi, the talented but tone deaf gondolier with the goofy smile and the warm heart.
The story is filled with humor, Morgenstern's funny rambling digressions and, of course, the moral of the fable.

It would be an ok childrens book...but it lacked the wit and great storyline that I've come to expect from William Goldman.
The Venetian gondoliers no longer sing and the reason they no longer sing is because of Luigi, the most famous and skilled gondolier to ever traverse the Grand Canal.

 Goldman vs. Morgenstern
Meaning that his humor, satire, and basic style of writing in his introduction is in many aspects the same as the novel itself.
There are two versions of the latter one: A Fable by S. Morgenstern, with the author being William Goldman and another called William Goldman's The Silent Gondoliers, with the author being S. Morgenstern.
Many authors have pen names, and it is believed that S. Morgenstern was Goldman's.

A few seconds ago as I write this, I went to add a review for The Silent Gondoliers, figuring that I'd plug it in right under the review for The Princess Bride.
Here, though, the story is smaller, both physically (the book is about 100 large-print pages) and conceptually.
This isn't a grand swashbuckling adventure -- it's a fable, a just-so story explaining why the gondoliers of Venice no longer sing.
