People weren't joking when they called the Clash "the only band that matters." At the end of a decade when most rock music was being made by increasingly self-possessed millionaires, the Clash were a revelation.
But if the Clash hadn't been so arrogant to begin with, they never could have convinced a generation that rock bands were capable of starting revolutions instead of just singing about them.

The Clash - The Singles (Album/Box Set Review)
There’s little doubt that The Singles, the latest overview of The Clash’s canon, falters slightly as a retrospective — particularly in comparison with the tightly focused two-disc outing The Essential Clash that was issued just a few years ago.
Across the entirety of The Singles, the artwork and the labels are historically accurate, and the discs themselves have been made to look just like the vinyl counterparts that they are meant to replace.
In tracing The Clash’s progress from the rampaging mayhem of White Riot and 1977 to the mainstream successes of Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go, The Singles finds the group strolling down a few wildly divergent paths without ever losing sight of its flirtations with a pop-oriented song structure.

That the Clash survived as long as they did — and, in fact, proved commercially viable in both the UK and US — is a clear testament to their rugged integrity and stubborn refusal to buckle despite enormous adversity, much of it self-induced.
The Clash received no small amount of criticism over the years: damned for their integrity (or lack thereof); assailed for absorbing fl musical styles; attacked for injecting politics into their songs; blamed for changing; blamed for not changing; ridiculed for having ideals; accused of abandoning them.
The Clash's many singles contained as much exciting music as their albums, and a lot of non-LP tracks were issued along the way.

Joe Strummer, gravel-voiced lead singer for the Clash, labeled "the only band that matters" by music critics during England's 1977 punk-rock revolution, comes to life as never before in Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten, Julien Temple's razor-sharp documentary.
To be debuted at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, The Future Is Unwritten incisively traces Strummer's larger-than-life musical career—from his early days with London pub-rockers the 101'ers, through the glory years of the Clash, to the Mescaleros, the band Strummer fronted until his untimely death in 2002.

The Clash (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Clash is the first album-length recording released by the English punk band The Clash.
This first album by the Clash was unusually musically varied for a punk band, with reggae, dub, pop, and early rock and roll influences plainly evident.
This was another moderately successful American album for The Clash, even though the sales were likely diluted by the longstanding popularity of the UK version on the import market.

The Clash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From their earliest days as a band, the Clash stood apart from their punk peers with their musicianship, as well as their lyrics; the passionate, left wing political idealism in the lyrics of frontmen Joe Strummer and Mick Jones contrasted with the anarchic nihilism of the Sex Pistols and the basic simplicity of the Ramones.
Initially, The Clash were notable for their strident leftist political outlook and distinctive clothes, self painted with Jackson Pollock-style paint splashes and revolutionary slogans, such as "Sten Guns in Knightsbridge," "Under Heavy Manners," and "Red Brigade".
The Clash were one of the headliners of this festival, along with David Bowie and Van Halen.

To me, The Clash were more important for what they represented and what they stood for than the music they actually made.
The Clash started out as a fairly conventional punk band and expanded their horizons to genres like funk and reggae.
Above all else, The Clash were role models in making sincere, important music during a time (the early '80s) where the music was getting obscured by glitter and gimmicks.

 The Clash: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
Recorded in three weekends, 1977's The Clash was considered too raw to be released on the US market (although it achieved the highest ever sales for an import album), so a modified version was released in 1979, replacing four songs from the original with three non album singles and a b-side.
The Clash achieved exactly what they wanted with Sandinista!; a sprawling triple album that can be difficult to sit through but which has a lot of great moments.
There aren’t a whole pile of other lost Clash gems here, but there’s nothing annoying either, and the whole album is relentlessly enjoyable; a combination of Jones’ melodic sense, Strummer’s charisma and the band’s restless energy and exploration of styles make this an effortless jewel in The Clash’s catalogue.

The group lashed back at CBS with the hard "Complete Control." The issue about control of single releases is evident here, but the song's also about how the fan-band interraction is hampered by security throwing the fans out.
An all-out assault of unleashed energy, the Clash's debut album demonstrates their taking social and socialist realism to artistic and political levels.

The Clash was one of the first and most important British punk bands.
In the 1970s, they were the Beatles to the Sex Pistols' Stones, and went on to incorporate elements from all the roots music they loved--reggae, rockabilly, soul, blues--without ever straying too far from their punk roots and their political commitment.
This collection, which moves chronologically from the band's early days at the heart of the UK punk movement to the funk experimentation of its latter career, serves as both stunning career resume and perfect introduction for the neophyte.

The Clash: The Singles: Pitchfork Record Review
The Clash wrote loads of political songs, and Joe Strummer's extracurricular sermonizing only inflated the band's finger-wagging rep. But Clash records were never didactic, cold, or patronizing-- The Singles is high proof that the group (unlike other equally-adept, equally-great political songwriters) were actually a killer party band.
Clearly, the triumph here is not so much the assembling of these tracks (these file-swapping times mean scoring rare cuts is less a victory than a banality), but the reminder that, after all the mythologizing and eulogizing, the Clash were a band who released a mess of mind-blowing singles.
As intellectual as the Clash may have seemed to some, their songs were always more ecstatic than enraged.

The Pistols had had a hit single first ("Anarchy In The U.K." in late 1976), but the Clash followed that up just months later with "White Riot," which you'll find on their debut LP.
And although both groups had very similar sounds, the Clash proved over and over again that they were every bit as politically volatile, and more importantly better songwriters and broader musicians.
The band's catalog is uneven and sparse, a lot of their contemporaries and imitators such as Elvis Costello, the Jam, and XTC had more to say lyrically, and the Clash's late 70s and early 80s experiments with disco, reggae, ska, and retro roots rock were sometimes embarassing.

Taken individually, their singles demonstrate absolute respect for the 45rpm format: many of their B-sides (Groovy Times, Gates of the West) could easily have been As.
Otherwise, their rat-a-tat machine-gun assault on the singles chart combined sharp pop songwriting with an experimental assimilation of street culture.
