The Skye Boat Song - Wikipedia
The Skye Boat Song has gained the reputation of a traditional Scottish song recalling the escape of the young pretender Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) after his defeat at Culloden in 1746: he escaped from Uist to the Isle of Skye in a small boat with the aid of Flora Macdonald.
The song was first published in Songs of the North by Boulton and MacLeod, London, 1884, a book that went into at least fourteen editions.
Miss MacLeod set down what she remembered of the air, with the intention of using it later in a book she was to co-author with Boulton, who later added the section with the Jacobite associations.

Tradition has it that Skye fishermen believed that if an argument occurred on the coast (where herring were caught), and this resulted in blood being spilled, then the herring would leave the coast and not return again during that season.
Skye fishermen believed that 'Crotal' was always looking for a way to return to the rocks, and so it was thought that anyone who went to sea wearing crotal-coloured clothing would 'sink like a stone', if they ever fell overboard, and their body would never be recovered.

This arrangement of the "Skye Boat Song" was originally intended for inclusion in Tippett´s Four Songs from the British Isles, composed for Bremen Radio in 1956.
The folk-songs he chose for this set were meant to demonstrate the contrasting characters of the people of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, respectively: and evidently the "Skye Boat Song" was to represent Scotland.
The "Skye Boat Song" should therefore be heard either on its own or as a pendant to the already published set.

But intelligence having been obtained where he was, and a number of troops having come in to quest him, it became absolutely necessary for him to quit that country without delay.
Miss Flora Macdonald, then a young lady, animated by what she thought the sacred principle of loyalty, offered, with the magnanimity of a heroine, to accompany him in an open boat to Sky, though the coast they were to quit was guarded by ships.
It then was proposed to carry him in one of Malcolm's boats to Lochbroom, though the distance was fifteen leagues coastwise.
