Upp agreed on the spot, and the Slits, with borrowed equipment and knowledge of two, maybe three chords, were a reality.
But the Slits, due primarily to their interest in incorporating other forms of ethnic music into their mix, were leaping beyond what was commonly accepted as punk rock, and as a result, were no longer seen as a punk band.

Long before contemporary feminism was able to force its way into the national debate, it existed not as an organized movement, but in the work of chicks who carved niches for themselves, not as a political statement but as a matter of survival.
The real value of dub for the Slits was that it allowed them to relax, calm down long enough to tweak the notion of punk as relentlessly aggressive music that must be performed at MACH 2 for maximum effectiveness.
Objectively speaking, the Slits were pretty hot, as shown in the photo on the CD booklet back.

The Slits - Biography - AOL Music
Along with the Raincoats and Liliput, the Slits are one of the most significant female punk rock bands of the late '70s.
Not only did they bravely (or foolishly, you be the judge) leap into the fray with little, if any, musical ability (on their debut tour with the Clash, Mick Jones used to tune their guitars for them), but through sheer emotion and desire created some great music.
Though much derided in their short existence, what the Slits achieved and what they meant to succeeding generations of young female rockers cannot be underestimated.

Calling them "gill slits" is reading Darwinian theory into the evidence.
Gill slits are simply the invaginations between the pharyngeal pouches.
The term is legitimate because the slits do establish contact between the outside and the pharynx.

The spacing between the fringes depends on the wavelength of the light and the separation of the slits.
The latest experiment is radically different because the slits exist in time not space, and because the interference pattern appears when the number of electrons at the detector is plotted as a function of their energy rather than their position on a screen.
The work was performed at the Technical University of Vienna in collaboration with physicists from the Max Born Institute in Berlin, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Munich and the University of Sarajevo.

 The Slits - In Conclusion
The Slits play a pivotal part in the history of Women in Punk rock in so many ways but not least the fact that for two years they were the only all girl band.
Without doubt The Slits were strong, sexy and intelligent individuals, but whether male or female, bands get judged by the same criteria; sales and strength of songs; and no matter how much of the first three they or anyone else have without the last two you are doomed to fail.
At the same time tho The Slits didn't create any major ripples nor did they release any music from their formative punk years to influence an audience and these last two points must weigh against them.

More recently, the CD titled In the Beginning was released in late 1997; a compilation of live material, it comprises both the Slits' older songs (in the traditional punk genre) as well as newer compositions (heavy on the reggae, dub and other experimental influences), and spans the period 1977 through 1981.

The Slits are perhaps the perfect example of that trend, as the Slits that appear on this 1978 recording sound nothing like the ironic dub-punkers who gave the world the classic album Cut.
The Slits tear through their songs, as if they're trying to get off-stage as quickly as possible, even though the band's tempo is about half as slow as the typical punk band's.
The set's highlight is the Slits' romp through "Femme Fatale", probably the most professional sounding track on the set, where Ari Up finds a perfect vehicle for her voice (was I the only one who didn't realize her vocals similarities to Nico?).

The songs might not have the punch of their early punk sides or the catchiness of the current pop trends circa 1981, but what they do have is a cutting edge sound and production.

As the first all-female punk band, the Slits played a primitive, boisterous mash-up of funk, reggae, dance music, and jittery guitar rock that offered a wonderfully confrontational counterpoint to the boys' club that was the English punk scene.

The Slits were a female punk rock trio formed in 1977 by members of the bands The Flowers of Romance and The Castrators[?].

However, by the time of their second 'official' LP release Return Of The Giant Slits(a 'semi-official' bootleg of poorly recorded early material having been released in the interim by Rough Trade), many felt that their initial energy, exuberance and innovativeness had deserted them.
