Foster on Film - Post-War British Comedy: The Smallest Show on Earth
By 1957, many of the post-war elements were fading from Post-War British Comedies, but not from The Smallest Show on Earth.
Resources were scarce and could not be spent on anything "frivolous," so cinemas were looking pretty threadbare by the mid '50s.
As Sellers went on to become the biggest star of the cast, The Smallest Show on Earth is marketed as a vehicle for his brand of comedy.

In these days where there are hardly any single or double screen cinemas left in Britain, and the entertainment companies are only interested in multiplexes with umpteen screens, The Smallest Show on Earth has an extra sheen of nostalgia to it.

A quaint film with an affection for the old-time movie experience, The Smallest Show on Earth is mostly a rather predictable sitcom involving the running of an old movie house.
The idea that a run-down house might show Westerns may not be unusual - film critics writing about the Western genre in the early 70s mentioned little U.K. theaters that showed oaters exclusively - and had hobby horses up front for little kids to ride on while watching.

Sellers was born in 1925 and first rose to prominence in Britain after the Second World War through his participation in "The Goon Show." The Smallest Show on Earth (1957)—A young couple, Matt and Jean Spencer, inherit a decaying cinema called the Bijou located in the backwater town of Sloughborough.
The part has minimal dialogue, relying more on visual humour, particularly Quill's efforts to keep the ancient projection equipment running in the face of faulty electrical circuits, constant film breakages, and the vibration caused by trains passing by just outside the theatre.
