The Smiths - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Morrissey's lyrics, while superficially depressing, were often full of mordant humour (The Smiths were "one of the few bands capable of making me laugh out loud," said Peel) and his lovelorn tales of alienation found an audience amongst a disaffected section of youth culture, bored by the ubiquitous synthesizer bands that then dominated the charts.

 Jack Feeny reviews: The Smiths
The Smiths made four official albums, and the fact you reviewed what is essentially a b-sides and rarities collection as an actual album and gave it 9 is perhaps a good indication of the greatness and prolific nature of the best band of the 80's.
It is also proof that the Smiths were one of the very few bands in the whole world that called it quits when they were still absolutely on top of their game.
Of course, the Smiths were hardly renowned for dramatic reinterpretations of songs, and Marr's rejection of guitar solos means he does not have much room for showing off, so these versions are all pretty much identical to the official versions.

The Smiths made their live debut late in 1982 and by the spring of 1983, the group had earned a small but loyal following in their hometown of Manchester and had begun to make inroads in London.
The Smiths' rise to the upper reaches of the British charts was swift, and the passion of their fans, as well as the U.K. music press, indicated that the group had put an end to the synth-powered new wave that dominated Britain in the early '80s.
