Adrian's Album Reviews : The Smiths
The album is not as euphoric musically as the highlights on The Queen is Dead ('Boy With the Thorn in His Side', 'Bigmouth' and 'There is a Light') but this is probably my fave Smiths album overall.
Obviously, any Smiths album has more depth, quality, thought, humour, passion, intelligence and musicality than 95% of the competition but in their canon this is not as strong an album as either THE SMITHS or MEAT IS MURDER.
The album its self is probably one of the most complete album is modern popular music history, its a bit like The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses" in way that when listening it feels like every song couldn't have been wrote better or arranged any differently.

This album was more strident and political than its predecessor, including the vegetarian proselytising of the title track (Morrissey forbade the rest of the group from being photographed eating meat), the light-hearted republicanism of "Nowhere Fast", and the anti-corporal punishment The Headmaster Ritual and Barbarism Begins at Home.
The resulting album, Viva Hate (a reference to the end of the Smiths) was released six months later, reaching #1 in the UK charts.
Morrissey's 1997 solo album Maladjusted included a song titled "Sorrow Will Come in the End" which commented on the case, and which was omitted from the UK version of the album due to fear of libel action.

When the Smiths bursted into the bland climate of the early-eighties U.K. pop scene, their refreshing minimalism, political outspokenness and smart, arty jangling guitar sound received a virtual salivating response from the British music press.
This consistent, raw album ultimately made clear the distinction between the corporate, slick side of the U.K. pop world and what would become the post-punk underground community.
This is The Smiths at their rawest, their most aggressive, the perfect union of rebelliousness and elegant sophistication.

The Smiths were comprised of the wonderfully dynamic bassist Andy Rourke, superb drummer Mike Joyce, innovative, intelligent guitarist Johnny Marr and the sophisticated, poetic vocalist Stephen Patrick Morrisey.
With a total of five years of existance, The Smiths came to an end far too early for such a brilliant vehicle, yet their output between this time space is lightyears beyond what most artists could even hope to achieve.
Although recorded prior to the band's inner decay, the album clearly shows signs of a band that is dissolving, as the triumphant arrogance is absent and Morrisey and Marr are both clearly miles apart.

Second LP Meat Is Murder solidified their fanbase but The Smiths were rightfully considered a singles band until 1985 tour de force Strangeways, Here We Come.
It certainly begins fantastically, Morrissey's disembodied cries (don't all Smiths albums begin with the disembodied cries of the Moz?) introducing the hard charge of "A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours," incidentally the last perfect song title in a career full of them.
In retrospect it seems obvious that the tensions between the songwriters were always what made The Smiths so interesting, and so it's not hard to understand why Strangeways' ultra-tense atmosphere would prove fascinating for years to come.
