SNAPPER - THE GIANT SNAPPING TURTLE MOVIE
Disclaimers abound on the Snapper site and in the liner notes of the film that the film is not to be taken seriously, but with my turtle-nard munching phobia, I cannot help but take it as such.
Snapper is a film that plays on a primal childhood fear of mine, namely that a giant snapping turtle will burst out of a pile of nearby leaves and take a big bite out of my nuts.
God bless the makers of "Snapper", bringing light to a member of the turtle family that is often forgotten and misunderstood.

 Matador Records Red Snapper Biography
‘Our Aim Is To Satisfy Red Snapper’ is easily their best record to date, with MC Det and Karim Kendra again joining Thair, Friend, and Ayers on a sweaty, film-noir ride that begins like a runway juggernaut and ends with an uneasy struggle for beauty and peace.
With their 1996 debut Prince Blimey, Red Snapper’s savage display of traditional jazz instrumentation in a comtemporary context — and, most importantly, the band's ability to pull it off live — was largely responsible for the influx of dance artists fusing acoustic instruments with electronic sounds.
Red Snapper's first vinyl came out in 1994, and is a murky gumbo of dubbed-out jazz and subterranean bass which sounds like nothing else of the time.

 Amazon.com: Books: The Snapper
After watching the film "The Snapper" over 100 times in my life time I figured it was time to read the book.
The Snapper concerns the unplanned pregnancy of the eldest daughter, delineating nine months of sparring between Sharon, who refuses to reveal the baby's father, and Jimmy Sr., the clan's vulgar, witty patriarch.
Sharon is determined to bear the child, referred to in Irish slang as a "snapper," and raise it alone.

While the first supplement of the drug is being induced, Snapper is visited by an angelic nurse who supplies him with an orange.
Snapper Carr (Stamford Lancaster) is broke, having just been fired from his job, so he is willing to risk those pesky side effects and become part of a study for Sak-600, a new anti-depressant drug that has yet to be tested on humans.

 Michael Collins
Michael Collins is a filmic voyage, and, it has to be said, an intellectual essay, about the heroic and the hero.
But then, Neil Jordan's film sets so many remarkable characters before us in their relationship with Michael Collins that it is a virtual recital of a pantheon before an Irish 'Gotterdammerung'.
That constituency may determine the immediate effect of the film.

The diversity of British film will be in focus at the Copenhagen International Film Festival in August, where a sidebar will be dedicated to the latest and best from both newcomers and well established filmmakers.

A Fish out of Water, Stephen Frears Comes to America with "Hi-Lo"
Starring Billy Crudup and Woody Harrelson as a pair of cowboys fighting for life and love, the film is a return to the low-budget arena that Frears favors.
His resume is eclectic to say the least; from the semiotic sexual farce "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid" to the Hollywood drama, "Dangerous Liaisons" to such UK comedies as "The Snapper" and "The Van," his work ranges from melodrama to comedy to character study.
Then I drifted into film, so I didn't expect to be a film director.

 Purple Rain
And, one of the reasons that this was pulled out for review is the fact that I had just had the chance to replace the original crappy snapper case with a nice new transparent Amaray case and a free replacement slick from Warners.
The film won an Oscar in 1984 for Best Original Song Score, as well as picking up Grammys, and that is what the film is all about.
As the bass channel gets a decent run here, the overall effect is of a bass-heavy soundtrack that does not carry any power to the music - which is after all the entire purpose of the film.

Chow Yun Fat plays what amounts to a supporting role, but what a cool supporting role it is. Throughout the film Chow does next to nothing.
This is the oldest Chow Yun Fat movie I have seen, made a few years before he became a major film star with A Better Tomorrow.
By the time it came out, I was already a Chow Yun Fat fan, having tracked down VHS copies of A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard Boiled, and begun to rent his other HK films on DVD.

Richardson's biography lists Eat The Rich (a film I would love to see on Region 4 DVD) as one of her film appearances in 1987, and whomever put Rachel Leigh Cook's biography together couldn't get the spelling of her name consistent from screen to screen.
The Region 4 and Region 1 versions of this disc are fundamentally identical, although the Region 1 version is packaged in a Snapper case, making our version the version of choice.

After a surfeit of "Jaysuses" and pub sing-alongs, you yearn for the sharp comedy of Roddy Doyle's reality-based Dublin stories, such as The Snapper or The Commitments.

Silent Era : DVD : Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler (1922) Review
Mabuse, the Gambler is nearly perfect, compromised only by the slightly abbreviated but acceptable survival state of the 35mm print (the best we have seen of this film).
The music and the audio commentary are valuable assets in this quality edition, with the windowboxed video transfer a fine example of how silent films should be presented on home video.
We also like the fact that Image DVDs are now being released in plastic keep cases rather than cardboard and plastic snapper cases.

 MTV.com - Movies - Stephen Frears
Frears ' subsequent films have been of wildly mixed quality: Hero (1992) and Mary Reilly (1996) were complete duds, while two Roddy Doyle adaptations, The Snapper (1993) and The Van (1996) were modest affairs that enjoyed a fairly positive reception.
Frears ' next three films proved to be some of the most successful of his career.
Frears and Kureshi again collaborated on Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), a film about the faltering relationship between a London couple.

That said, Tim Lucas's excellent liner notes, which adorn the inside of the (ugh!) snapper case, are a very worthwhile addition, giving a great deal of insight into the ideas behind the film and its actual production.
Bava manages to avoid letting the film become pretentious or overbearing thanks to the lighthearted sense of humour, which pervades throughout, much of it at the expense of either Nora, thanks to her inexperience, or Marcello, who is the frequent victim of slapstick gags, most of which involve him further injuring a broken finger.
He was the kind of director who would try his hand at anything in order to put food on the table, and it is this very trait that separates him from Dario Argento, and in my view makes him the lesser of the two.

The Mediadrome - Reviews - Dirty Pretty Things
With an accomplished career that includes films like Dangerous Liaisons, The Grifters, The Snapper and High Fidelity, Stephen Frears adds yet another richly textured and extremely human story to his impressive resume.
In Dirty Pretty Things, the latest film from prolific director Stephen Frears, illegal immigrants are forced to work menial service jobs in order to stay in the country, and it isn’t a pretty sight.
What is pretty is the film itself, which rises above its dark subject matter to emerge as a strangely beautiful love story with haunting suspense, unexpected humor and a payoff that will blow you away.

 WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY
Trudy was directed by Kieron J. Walsh and written by Roddy Doyle, who is probably best known as the author of the novel that became "The Barrytown Trilogy" (The Commitments, The Snapper, and The Van).
Even though most of Trudy is based on a handful of old films, and it offers the basic "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back" story, it remains surprisingly fresh thanks to the great chemistry between the two extremely likeable leads.
The soundtrack includes a great, eclectic bunch of songs (one from Sebadoh, no less), and I can't convey how wonderful it is to see a film set in Dublin where people are clean, have nice jobs and live in nice homes.

NYPOST.COM Movie Reviews: WILCO, WARTS & ALL By MEGAN TURNER
Jones' film, shot on grainy 16mm black-and-white with a snapper's eye for composition, assumes a certain amount of knowledge about the band as it begins and ends with the recording and release of a single album.
Even during moments of tension, the film itself unspools at a leisurely pace, reflecting the laid-back approach of the band's (remaining) members.
But the concert footage is stirring, the recording sessions are intriguing, and - on the way to striking a blow for artistic integrity - this quality band may pick up new admirers.
