 PES GROUP - Committee of the Regions - Home
The 1st Vice-President of the PES Group in the Committee of the regions, State Secretary of Rheinland-Palatinate Karl-Heinz Klär, participated as the official representative of the German Länder in the opening of the Intergovernmental Conference on the reform of the EU Constitutional Treaty on July 23rd 2007.
The President of the PES Group in the Committee of the Regions Mercedes BRESSO stressed the need to acknowledge in the new Treaty the importance of the local and regional levels of governance for the democratic life of the Union, the legitimacy of the European project and the successful implementation of EU policies.
Michael COHEN (Malta), Mayor of Kalkara and PES Group coordinator in the commission for Sustainable Development (DEVE), took part in a conference organised by the Socialist Group in the European Parliament on the "Future EU maritime policy" which took place in Brussels, on the 14th of June 2007.

Seven cyberliberties groups have issued a joint letter urging the European Council "to refrain from new and extended communications interception and lawful access powers for police forces and intelligences services." The organizations also urged leaders not to implement legislation mandating that internet and telecommunication service providers retain traffic data for law enforcement purposes.
