In 1991 Somalia was a nation without a government or central security force, where a collection of armed clan militia fought over spoils and, in a combination of political and ethnic conflict, ravaged the land and systematically killed and displaced the civilian population.

The US navy's Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain and patrols the Indian Ocean, received reports of "an attempted act of piracy" approximately 50 miles (80km) off the Somali coast on Friday, it said in a statement.
Later an unspecified number of sailors were taken off the vessel and a quantity of small arms was recovered, the navy said.
Shipping companies say there have been 35 incidents of piracy off the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia in the past nine months.

PS: Komik - the movie is about the 'incident' in Somalia when the US troops got ambushed and their chopper "Black Hawk" was shot down.
Of course in the movie, the Americans come out looking like the hero's, all Somali's are portrayed as terrorists and fanatics, and the historical aspect is totally twisted.
ironically, illegal tapes of this movie made their way to somalia and it was a big hit.

 US + UN? - America's Debate
Given the rising opposition of the Iraqi people to the presence of US troops in Iraq, and given the problems of replacing its ground forces that the US army appears to be facing, should the USA not now reconsider allowing the UN to move peace keeper troops into Iraq?
I seem to recall that in the famous US Somalia incident, it was a Pakistani UN force which came to rescue the beleaguered US forces demonstrating that the UN is not the enemy, and here in Denmark, we have a long tradition of success both with UN peace keeping roles and NATO roles.
I see no reason why the US cannot work along side the UN.
