The Song of Hiawatha, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
While The Song of Hiawatha was an immediate popular success and hailed by many as the first poetic achievement by a white man concerning the myths and legends of the American Indians, its popularity has waned in recent years, and critics have mocked it as overly sentimental and idealized.
Hiawatha's coming is foretold by Gitche Manito, the mighty spirit who gathers his people together and tells them a peacekeeper will be born who will bring wisdom to the warring tribes and stop their fighting.

  Hiawatha Summary
Hiawatha went on to explain that the string in which fl shells alternate with white indic ates that peace should exist between tribes, while the string with white on the end and fl in the middle means that wars must end and peace should be declared.
Hiawatha assured Tadadaho he would be allowed to be the head chief of the Iroquois Confederacy if he promised to govern in accord with their philosophy of peace, at which Tadadaho relented and joined the confederacy.
Hiawatha was a skilled and charismatic orator, and was instrumental in persuading the Iroquois peoples, the Senecas, Onondagas, Oneidas, Cayugas, and Mohawks, a group of Native North Americans who shared a common language, to accept The Great Peacemaker's vision and band together to become the Five Nations of the Iroquois confederacy.

 Whistling Shade
Hiawatha is a legendary Iraquois hero, an actual chief of the Mohawks around 1570, who united the different tribes into the Iraquois nation.
One might expect Longfellow himself, after writing Hiawatha, to have been an activist for the plight of the American Indian; but the little activism he did was spent in abolitionist causes, and in fact agitation was not in his character.
Shortly thereafter Hiawatha departs in his canoe, to the Islands of the Blessed, from which, in an Arthurian gesture, he promises to return in the distant future.

In the Indian legend, Wenonah, daughter of Nokomis—who is the daughter of the moon—bears a son, Hiawatha, to the West Wind, Mudjekeewis.
Another passage in Hiawatha may have found its inspiration in Kalevala, namely the story of Hiawatha's gift of corn to the nation, as told in Canto V. The hero fasts for seven days and prays to Master of Life for prosperity of his people, and maize is given in answer.

Native American Poems for Kids - The Song of Hiawatha - Children's Indian Poetry
Such a poem, which is really a collection of ballads or songs about heroes and about the beliefs and superstitions of a race, is often called an epic.
This means that such stories are very closely connected with the simple life of a simple people--there is much of their thought about Nature, much of their love of the land where they live.
Finally, notice at the end of the poet's Introduction, two things: First, Hiawatha lived and toiled and suffered that the tribes might prosper, that he might advance his people-thus an epic poem deals with the founding of a people or race.
