The Songs of Distant Earth (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Songs of Distant Earth is a album, written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield.
The Songs of Distant Earth was the first of Oldfield's foray into science fiction-related music, and songs such as "Supernova" and "Hibernaculum" could be seen as similar or even influenced by Enigma, while "New Beginning" has ethnic world chants in the style of Deep Forest.
The Saami yoik chant on "Prayer For The Earth" was composed and performed by Nils-Aslak Valkeapรครค.

Dirty Three : Ocean Songs - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
There is an aesthetic at work on Ocean Songs, from the cover through to the last note of the original recordings (early issues of the CD came with a second CD with three bonus tracks, all of which have surfaced elsewhere), the purpose of which is held in the somewhat mysterious title.
The centerpiece of the album -- from which there is no return, either to "traditional" D3 form or to anything else considered rock music -- is "Authentic Celestial Music." Ellis, for the first time, overdubs his violin, creating a series of drones and overlapping melodies.
On Ocean Songs, the Dirty Three have expanded themselves immeasurably as a band by holding themselves in to listen, and have made some of the most haunting, poetically profound, and emotionally honest music ever to come out of the "rock" world.

Songs of Distant Earth: Book vs. the Album
The worst thing about the narration is its style and perspective: as if the twentieth century was the most important period in the whole history of the Earth, as if nothing else was discovered since the year 2000.
Even people that were born on Thalassa seem to know the history of Earth's 20th century better than their own.
The idea of meeting people that lived on Earth with those whose had no contact with Earth for a long time (their antenna was destroyed by the eruption of a volcano) is brilliant, but in my opinion not well-developed enough.

All the songs on this album pay pretty obvious homage to 80’s metal, tempered with a great pop punch and a little dash of hardcore to keep things lively.
None of the songs slow it down except for the acoustic outro, affectionately referred to as the “Marty Confessional.” It is a good song in it’s own right, but I’m not sure that it fits in with an otherwise energetic, fast-paced album.
Fear not, this is not a teary album, and you can’t understand most of it anyway; so just be glad it’s there fueling the fire of the songs.

Ground and Sky review - Mike Oldfield - Songs of Distant Earth
While this album might perhaps be appreciated as background music (and I've read several favorable reviews of it as just that), I doubt many prog fans are going to find this interesting enough for active listening.
Oldfield is not an artist who has aged gracefully in the eyes of many of his fans; between what are perceived as weak albums and and endless stream of transparent Tubular Bells-related cash-ins, he has simply worn out his welcome except among the true believers.
Songs of Distant Earth came out in the mid-90s when there wasn't a ton of hope, but the memories of the brilliant Amarok had not entirely faded.

(Both outer space and inner space under water) are the themes of this album, but Oldfield's synthesized artistry comes up short during the course of the 17 tracks, mainly because of the intermittent talking and unnecessary vocabulary that quickly becomes irksome and ineffective.
About the music, it is usually Mike Oldfield's differentiation of rhythms or styles on a song to song basis that makes his music thought-provoking and fresh.
On this album, the same rhythm lurks through half of the songs, with only smidgens of add-on instrumentation to elevate its flow.

Songs of Distant Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Songs of Distant Earth is the common title of several science fiction works by Arthur C. Clarke, including a science fiction short story, a short movie synopsis, and a 1986 soft science fiction novel that all bear the same title.
The story is centred on a rendezvous between human beings far in the future, after the destruction of the Earth, on the oceanic planet of Thalassa.
In the story, humans respond to the prospect of unavoidable doom by launching a series of robot colony ships into space, to continue Earth life after the destruction of the homeworld (caused by the Sun becoming a nova).

Oldfield has always had a foot inside of the rock genre, though a lot of his albums are filled with atmospheric sounds and really beautifull moments with soaring feelings.

SONGS OF THE HUMPBACK WHALE: the original album of humpback whale songs, produced by Roger Payne
This is the re-mastered reissue of the long out-of-print original album of humpback whale songs that have touched the hearts of millions of people around the world.
It was recorded at a depth of 1500 feet using an extraordinary array of deep-water microphones that were part of a cold-water experiment by the US Navy, costing tens of millions of dollars, and now claimed by the sea.
Studying the long, complex songs which the whales repeat again and again, I was amazed by their musical intelligence, and shocked to learn that these magnificent beings were rapidly being hunted to extinction.

In the universe of Earth, Wind and Fire these gifts are plentiful: the earthiness of the soul, the wind of the spirit and passions eternal flame.
Always innovative, Earth, Wind and Fire greatly influenced the sound of pop in the '70s, neatly meshing Latin funk rhythms, soul, and RandB with gospel harmonies, horns and the classy falsetto of lead singer Philip Bailey.
Earth, Wind & Fire, cast as a hungry band of hopefuls, were the pawns in a ruthless game.

At least TB2 and Songs have individual tracks for each song, though – lol – the original Tubular Bells is just two tracks corresponding to side one and side two of the vinyl record.
Another cool aspect to Songs is that it’s an enhanced CD and there’s an interactive bit where you have to solve a MYST -style puzzle to unlock a little bit of interactive content and a music video (with mid-90s 3D rendering).

Fretless AZM's third album in barely two years, 1997's Distant Earth maintains the template used by the earlier albums: wiggly funk-based grooves mixing samplers and live instruments to create a sound somewhere between the cold futurism of electronica and the organic grooviness of the likes of Medeski, Martin & Wood.
Fretless AZM mainstays Max Brennan and Rupert Brown look to '70s fusion and funk for most of their stylistic cues, pulling elements from both Parliament/Funkadelic and Deodato, but there's a chilliness to songs like the title track; for all of its African-style tuned drums and rubbery basslines, it still sounds oddly clinical.

There is not a single song on this album that one feels it should not be there.
At the time of the albums release this was a market cornered by Enigma and at times, especially on the lead single "Hibernaculum" Oldfield comes perilously close to sounding a little too like them.
This album was also one of the first to have CD Rom material contained within it, Oldfield proves some twenty-one years after his first album that innovation still comes naturally to him.

"Distant Stars" reverses field with its plaintive and heavily echoed digital piano (notes seem to go on forever - receding further and further into the distance) evoking the vastness of deep space, helped along by whooshing solar wind effects and subtle drones deep underneath the piano.
Perhaps a more accurate description, as can be experienced when listening to his debut album, 'Beyond', is a music score for a movie, except that there is no movie and the only visuals available are all in the mind.
The songs here all verge on the ambient side of electronica, and their tranquil moods will appeal not only to chill-out regulars but also to new-age afficionados.

This is a special album by Mike Oldfield for several reasons.
Another attractive characteristic is the fact that it is based on the novel of the same title written by Arthur C. Clarke (the author of "2001, A Space Odyssey"), and the fact that the writer has given his support to the project.
The musical contents of this album unites Oldfield's symphonism with futuristic atmospheres and a general approach in accordance with the character of the book that inspired it.

Although I think that Mike Oldfield's 'The Songs of Distant Earth' album is more of a spiritual, 'new-age' album (which I also really loved - one of my top-5 albums ever!), 'Tres Lunas' is more of a chillout album, less 'serious' in spiritual meaning...
I think this album would be just PERFECT as the 'background' music for a romantic dinner at home, or just a 'chilling out' evening for yourself, with some candles.
I really like The Sacred Fire album - think it's a very nicely flowing, refreshing music (and that's why I gave it a 5-star rating) - however, it seems like the other albums (judging from my second CD and samples of music of the other albums) are very similar to this one.

Analysis of The Songs of Distant Earth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
I remember thinking, on first hearing that Mike was to record music to the theme of Arthur C. Clarke's novel The Songs of Distant Earth, that there could not have been a more appropriate novel of the science-fiction genre to receive this treatment.
The important thing to realise is that this album was not what anyone expected it to be, least of all, I should think, the people at Warner.
If I do have one quibble with the music on this album, it is that "Ascension" and "A New Beginning" did not live up to my expectations of an Oldfield conclusion, being less that totally "earth-moving".
