Sontaran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sontarans are a fictional extraterrestrial race from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who.
It was still ongoing at the time of The Sontaran Experiment, which takes place at least 10,000 years beyond the 121st century.
Although physically formidable, the Sontarans' weak spot is the probic vent at the back of their neck; a warrior was killed by a well-aimed knife at that spot.

The non-canonical Doctor Who role-playing game from FASA provides the following information: The Sontarans were originally a conventional two-gendered species, but early in their history as a space-faring people (approximately 1400 BC Earth time) they shifted over to a clone-based method of reproduction.
All Sontarans since then are derived from the genetic stock of General Sontaris, though some modifications have been introduced over time.
The war between the Sontarans and the Rutans has continued for at least five thousand years, with both sides remaining fairly evenly matched and neither side interested in negotiating for peace.

The Sontaran Experiment is something of an oddity being only two episodes long, and for the only time in the show’s history, filmed entirely on location.
The plot concerns a Sontaran’s experiment on a small group of humans that have landed on Earth, in order to assess how easy it will be for the Sontarans to conquer humanity.
Similarly, the Sontaran prosthetic head used in this story is not as effective as the one seen in The Time Warrior (though it is no-where near as bad as the plastic sludge they ended up with later on).

As a final warning to the main Sontaran fleet, the Doctor sends a message to them, telling of their emissary's destruction and warning that without Styre's report they cannot know the strength of human resistance and so had better look elsewhere - brinkmanship at its most effective.
