The Sound of Jazz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sound of Jazz was a landmark television program that was part of CBS's Seven Lively Arts series.
It featured most of the top East Coast Jazz musicians of the day, playing styles from dixieland to bebop and twelve-tone.
It was also released as a recording by Columbia Records, although the gramophone version preceded the telecast and is not its soundtrack.

The hills are alive with the sound of...
This is Umbria Jazz, a week-long festival that every July takes over the major venues and public spaces of the medieval town and boasts a huge roster of artists.
The sound filled the valley as we sat on a wall outside to drink wine and listen to the music, the air thick with the scent of rosemary and leaf mould.

dOc DVD Review: The Sound of Jazz (1957)
But still, the level of talent that was in the studio that day was formidable, and these fine musicians sound terrific in their various configurations.
Extras Review: Three jazz tunes are on hand, playing over CD cover art—Coleman Hawkins does Dali (04m:33s), and then he's joined by Red Allen on South (06m:22s); finally, Sarah Vaughan sings East of the Sun (07m:36s) with Count Basie and his orchestra.
Technically very weak, this disc still affords jazz fans the chance to see some of the best doing their thing, which is a whole lot better than most of what's on television these days.

The band's name, adapted from the high school's Latin motto, "Mens Sana en Corpore Sano" (A Sound Mind in a Sound Body), is quite appropriate, given the powerhouse ensemble work that is the trademark of the 18-piece group.
The jazz orchestra is an original American art form that combines the sheer joy and freedom of jazz rhythms with a rich and powerful orchestral sound.
Following in the tradition of the famous jazz orchestras of the 1930s and 40s (commonly known as "big bands"), Sound Body plays an eclectic mix of styles - from classic swing to hard-driving Latin, to lush ballads.

The Sound of Jazz presents a pleasing range of jazz.
From the ensemble work of Count Basie’s Orchestra and the solo based scores woven together with breaks and bridges, great jazz breaks beyond the barriers of the medium in which it is presented.
The Sound of Jazz is a nostalgic time capsule: great music poorly produced, but now perfectly preserved.

Why is the double bass "the sound of jazz?" [Archive] - TalkBass Forums
This is analogous to the situation with the DB in jazz: the main reason the instrument sounds appropriate is because it was the only thing available when all the Great Masters (*cough*) made their classic recordings.
New Orleans-style jazz is a marching music, after all, and it's a lot easier to march with a tuba than a double bass.
While jazz has never been about performances in the vein of classical compositions, this novel approach I'm sure has some merit, but it certainly isn't in jazz's tradition, (which is not to say anything negative of the idea).

Oddly omitting Thelonious Monk, this DVD presentation of CBS Television's The Sound of Jazz still rates near the top of jazz on the small screen, albeit in a somewhat diminished capacity, lagging behind the earlier VHS release.
But for most jazz fans, any edition of The Sound of Jazz still boasts, regardless of drawbacks, the ultimate televised gathering of many of the music's key artists.
Particularly evident with this transfer is how the studio lights wreak havoc with the reflections in the brass instruments, especially near the beginning of the program, emitting strange fl bands that refract and compromise the image, a problem picked up less clearly in the VHS version.

Yanow wants his most recent work (after Afro-Cuban Jazz, LJ 3/15/01) to read like "a series of short stories," and readers will indeed often forget that they are perusing what boils down to an encyclopedia.
A prolific and respected jazz writer, Yanow manages to cover the gamut of styles from Dixieland to avant-garde in 479 short biographies, which are accurate (if sometimes opinionated) as well as refreshingly entertaining.
Also included are an essay on the history of the jazz trumpet, a bibliography of other important reference works, and 29 additional short biographies of other famous musicians/composers who recorded with the trumpet (e.g., Benny Goodman).

In fact, besides the overwhelming fact of the superiority of the swinging nature of Basieism, the thing that impressed me most was the playing of Webster and Coleman Hawkins who were veterans of the 1930s--and in Hawkin's case the 1920s--who could still play it hard, dirty, and almost bopish in the 1950s.
This is one of the greatest jazz films ever made, but this particular edition is a cheapo rip-off with truly rotten picture and sound quality.
I have the VHS version from several years ago, and it is a masterpiece despite the poor-quality video and sound; the performances (for the most part) completely make up for any technical shortcomings and then some, to say the least.

The Sound of Jazz, originally aired Sunday, December 8, 1957, on CBS, has never been duplicated in capturing such a wide array of jazz musicians from various styles -- swing, cool, modern -- sometimes cross pollinating in a lively yet casual atmosphere.
Jazz critics Whitney Balliett and Nat Hentoff selected the musicians, set them up in a studio in front of a live audience, and told the cameramen to simply follow them as they jammed, talked, and hung out.
Performances include the Henry "Red" Allen All-Stars featuring Pee Wee Russell and Coleman Hawkins; Billie Holiday with the Mal Waldron All-Stars featuring Lester Young, Doc Cheatam, Ben Webster, and Hawkins; Count Basie's All-Stars featuring Jimmy Rushing; and the Jimmy Giuffre Trio.
