No. 551: The Sounds of Silence
The sound of silence is Paul Simon's wrenching metaphor for our inability to hear one another in the midst of our own noise.
Sound -- any sound -- is a pattern of density variations that travel like waves through air.
So we are daring to disturb the sounds of silence after all.

The Eloquent Sounds of Silence by Iyer Pico - Articles - House of Solitude - Hermitary
Silence, like all the best things, is best appreciated in its absence: if noise is the signature tune of the world, silence is the music of the other world, the closest thing we know to the harmony of the spheres.
In Tibet, where the silence has a tragic cause, it is still quickened by the fluttering of prayer flags, the tolling of temple bells, the roar of wind across the plains, the memory of chant.
Silence, then, could be said to be the ultimate province of trust: it is the place where we trust ourselves to be alone; where we trust others to understand the things we do not say; where we trust a higher harmony to assert itself.

Sounds of Silence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sounds of Silence is an album by Simon and Garfunkel released January 17, 1966.
The album's title is a slight modification of the title of the duo's first major hit, "The Sound of Silence", which was released previously on the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., and also on the soundtrack to the movie The Graduate.
Second issue: Enlarged title letters, with only the first letter of the words "Sounds" and "Silence" in the album title capitalized.

Sound waves travel through the air in much the same way as ripples from a drop of rain spread over the surface of a lake.
The speakers subsequently generate the reverse sound in the form of pressure waves in anti-phase with the unwanted noise.
Since the sound is detected and transmitted at approximately the same location, the signal analysis must be extremely fast.

The Sound of Silence ( Paul Simon )   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The sound of "Sounds" is enormously pleasing, and the language is chosen with care, but the tone is too didactic, most gnawingly when the singer becomes the ignored sage ("but my words like silent raindrops fell") after his offer to lead ("take my arms...").
The image of silence as a cancer, growing and wiping out the possibility of communication, is powerful, as is the famous image of the neon sign, representing the empty commercialism pervading life, being worshipped as a god.
Simon's solo version of 'Sound' is his personal vision, with all the introspective bitterness and sense of failure up front in his vocal delivery, which contrasts markedly with the arranged, professional interpretation he clings to in the harmony vocal version.

People with tinnitus can hear a range of sounds within their head, but the most common seem to be hissing, ringing, roaring, banging or clicking noises which are experienced in one or both ears or somewhere within the centre of the head.
Beethoven and Schumann were both tormented by head noise, almost as if the requisite sensitivity to sound that being a composer or musician requires leads to a 'tuning in' to the peculiar sounds of the brain.
It is thought that some head sounds might arise from increases or changes in the pattern of nerve activity from both the ear and the parts of the brain that deal with how we hear sound.

Other mics measure "total airborne noise" to the driver, then a variety of different inputs - noise from the top of the engine, exhaust tone, intake sound - are studied to determine their individual contribution.
Equally complex, however, is the process of quantifying the sound "signatures" that become the testing targets.
He takes the sounds - and sometimes just the plain loudness, or lack thereof - and employs sophisticated sound-quality software to quantify the "target" noise.

To this we would add that silence should also be observed after Mass until one is outside the Church building, both for respect toward the Blessed Sacrament, and toward those members of the faithful who wish to prolong their thanksgiving after Mass.
This form of interior silence does not impede, and indeed favors, full and active participation in those parts of the celebration where the community is united in acclamation and song, for each person is more fully aware of what he or she is doing.
Our modern world is starved of silence and Holy Mass should be a privileged moment to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and, through worship and participation in Christ's eternal sacrifice, become capable of giving an eternal value to these same daily and transitory activities.

As we saw in the previous article, after Communion a period of silence should be observed or a hymn may be sung which is different from the hymn sung by all during the reception of Communion.
In general it is best to observe the period of silence and even on those occasions when a suitable hymn is sung, it seems preferable that it be a meditative piece executed by the choir so as to also allow for silent thanksgiving.
It may sometimes be possible to combine both methods, either leaving a brief period of silence after a hymn or else concluding a period of silence with a psalm or song of thanksgiving either executed by the choir or by the whole congregation.

A third erroneous belief that tends to be held by managers in organizations characterized by silence is that unity, agreement and consensus are signs of organizational health, while disagreement and dissent should be avoided.
We believe, therefore, that a climate of silence is rooted not only in objective features of the workplace, but also in social interactions that contribute to sensemaking processes.

To form this monument to memory and to sing the silenced words of the Cuban people, Engle/the narrator(5) emphasizes the novel's goals in the style of the narrative, choosing to stress remembering not only through what is said but also through how it is said.
As she describes the silence she encounters in Cuba, the narrator clearly wants to capture the pervasiveness of this state, and so she directly challenges the reader to comprehend the horror.
The narrator clarifies that Cuba is not simply a quiet island, but a silenced island, constantly uttering phrases such as "melancholy silence" (19), "a mysterious spell of silence" (20), and "how penetrating that silence became" (21) to describe conditions there.

Written in 1952, it came at the exact mid-point of his 80-year life of discovery and culminated his exploration of indeterminacy, music in which some elements are carefully scripted with others left to chance.
While the performer makes as little sound as possible, Cage breaks traditional boundaries by shifting attention from the stage to the audience and even beyond the concert hall.
Its idea sounds simplistic and even stupid, but performances are fascinating, since they involve each listener so fully and intimately.
