Topic: The Source novel

Novel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Having become one of the major literary genres over the past 200 years the novel is today the object of discussions demanding artistic merits, a specific literary style and a deeper meaning than a true story of the same content could claim to have.
The new genre adopted the name novel: this new novel was a work of new epic proportions, with the effect that the English (and Spanish) finally needed a new word for the original short "novel": The term novella was finally created to fill the gap in English.
The story was firmly a "novel" and not a "romance": a story of unparalleled female virtue, with a heroine who had had the chance to risk an illicit amour and not only withstood the temptation but made herself more unhappy by confessing her feelings to her husband.

It's a good novel to read in light of the current conflicts in the Middle East, though, as a novel, the history is of course not always consistent with current scholarly though, so read it for the superb storytelling.
Historical novels are allowed to play with reality, to play with facts in an effort to fool the reader into thinking that various people or scenes are true, when in fact they are almost total fabrications based on vague histories or unproven lore.
Although "The Source" chronicles the history of the Jews through the lives of 20th century characters (and flashbacks through time), it is a book for all people (Christians, Muslims, Asians, Jews, agnostics, atheists), because it tells the story of individuals struggling, living and dying within an evolving cultural context.

OSA UNM Student Chapter - A Laser Synchrotron Femtosecond X-ray Source for Novel Imaging
A compact laser synchrotron X-ray source was developed to demonstrate a bright femtosecond X-ray generation based on inverse Compton scattering via interaction between terawatt femtosecond laser pulses and picosecond relativistic electron bunches.
Novel adaptive techniques are employed with the laser to achieve the required stability during operation, namely the timing stabilization of a mode-locked oscillator less than 100fs, and the wave front control of the amplified pulses.
The electron source is a laser photocathode RF-gun with water-cooling channels to achieve 100Hz level repetition rate.

The blossoming romance between Hester and Dimmesdale is interesting enough to cause a stir of minor emotion, especially in such scenes as Hester's trek through the forest, where she first encounters the reverend bathing in the river.
The adaptation, however free it may be from the confines of the source novel, is chock full of some of Hollywood's most contrived plot lines and setpieces, while the acting leaves much to be desired.

 Glossary of Literary Terms
The 'nothing' he begins with is thus the source of man's freedom, for at each moment it is man's will that can choose how to act or not to act.
However, each such decision affects the future doubly: a man is or should be responsible for the consequences of his actions; and each action necessarily excludes the other potential actions for that moment, and their consequences, and thus at least partially limits the potentialities for future actions.
If the propagandistic purpose dominates the work so as to dwarf or eclipse all other elements, such as plot and character, then the novel belongs to the realm of the didactic and probably cannot be understood or appreciated for its own sake as a work of art.

BRmovie.com: BR FAQ: About the source novel DADoES
As you would expect in any movie adaptation of a novel, some events from the book were changed or dropped entirely for the film (just like the movie contained things not in the book).
The novel also seems to have a different focus: it is very concerned with ecological themes, explaining how a nuclear world war ravaged the earth (forcing the majority of humanity to leave the planet) and making most animal life extinct - thereby rendering the surviving species and specimens invaluable.
These things are never explained in the movie; the opening scene does suggest heavy industrial pollution is responsible for the dreary condition the city is in, and the situation with the animals is alluded to in some of the dialogue, but we are never explicitly told.

Bright Lights Film Journal | The Source
Chuck Workman’s The Source looks at these issues and the whole history of the Beats in a intriguing, if ultimately rather shallow, documentary that’s less a linear biography of the movement than a kind of "Beat chic" sampler.
In spite of its sometimes irritatingly dizzy style — you’d need a supercomputer to count the number of cuts — The Source gives some sense of Beat trajectory from a kind of unconscious collaboration among a group of hipsters, to a defined and recognized movement, to a parody of itself as early as the 1960s.
The re-creations are mostly stylized and silly — Turturro posing in front of a bridge screeching lines from Ginsberg; Johnny Depp smarmily returning Kerouac to life; and Dennis Hopper most successful, inexplicably both sounding and looking like the sweet-sinister William Burroughs in a seedy hotel room.
