Ex-soldiers in the Borderers, which has since merged with other regiments to form the modern-day Royal Regiment of Wales, have flown to Africa to join Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan, Zulu chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi and British High Commissioner in South Africa, Ann Grant, in remembrance of their heroic predecessors on Friday.
Links between the Zulu nation and Wales have been forged since the legendary battle and a largely Zulu regiment in the modern-day South African army awards a bravery medal named after Rorke's Drift soldier John Chard - the character played by Rhondda actor Baker in the film.
Retired Royal Regiment of Wales soldier Rodney Ashwood, from Brecon, said the battle of Rorke's Drift had always had a prominent place in the folklore of Welsh troops, but the film had made the stand famous to the wider public.

The Regiment was formed on 11th March, 1719, and continued through 250 years until its amalgamation on 11th June, 1969, with The South Wales Borderers (24th Regiment) at a ceremony in the grounds of this castle to form The Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st) Foot.
In 1751 the Regiment of Invalids became the 41st Regiment of Foot, and in 1756 a second Battalion of the 24th Regiment (later the South Wales Borderers) was raised, which two years afterwards became the 69th Regiment of Foot.

From possibly the most well-known regiment of the period, companies of the 24th South Wales Borderers regiment of foot were involved in the famous defeat at Isandlwana, and later that day, the heroic defense of Rorke's Drift.
This platoon of 20 men have dyed their sun-helmets in tea, a practise that was becoming popular in other parts of the Empire, which created a less dazzling and obvious target for Boer marksmen and the like.
One of their number is a sergeant, indicated by three chevrons on his right arm.

His VC is held at the regimental museum of the South Wales Borderers, at Brecon in Powys, who often claim this award!
Their objective was to cross an area of fields, bordered with high hedges, and then cross the canal at a point where their was a Lock House.

He studied at Cardiff School of Art (1939-42), served with the South Wales Borderers and Indian Signal Corps (1942-47) and then attended the Royal College of Art (1947-51) where he studied printmaking, at first under Robert Austin (etching and engraving) and then Edwin la Dell (lithography).
He returned to Wales where he taught at Cardiff School of Art (1951-60) and afterwards at Liverpool Polytechnic where he became Head of the Faculty of Art and Design.
His work is in several public collections; his commissioned etched portraits of 1978 are represented in the National Museum of Wales, and the National Library of Wales holds a small number of his pastel portraits.

On 16th August 1913 Frederick was a witness with Nora Cumber at the marriage of William Rose to Margaret Povey at the Church of St Peter and St Paul's, Ewhurst.
Sir Douglas Haig, at that period the Corps Commander, wrote of the battalion:"The conduct of the South Wales Borderers in driving back the strong attack made on them is particularly deserving of praise" and subsequently visited the Battalion in order to thank them personally for saving the situation on the Aisne.

The flag was in a generic holder beside the tombstone of a man born in Wales and his wife, born in England.
The insignia of the South Wales Borderers was inscribed in the tombstone with the Egypt designation in the wreath above the S.W.B. initials.
There is also a strong USA/Welsh connection WW2, Burma 6th Btn SWB along with others, forming the 36th Division, were under the comamd of Gen. Stilwell.

The South Wales Borderers Museum is located at Brecon in mid-Wales, the Regiment's home for over 120 years.
Located in Cardiff, the museum commemorates the services of the infantry in South Wales, namely the Welch Regiment (1719-1969) and, more recently, the Royal Regiment of Wales.
In addition to the services of the regular battalions of the regiment, the museum commemorates the history of the Glamorgan militia, and the auxiliary land forces of South Wales (1757-1969), including the Infantry and Rifle Volunteers and Yeomanry Cavalry.

 CSM J H Williams VC - A Welsh Victoria Cross winner
The most decorated Welsh non-commissioned officer of all time, Company Sergeant Major John (Jack) Henry Williams was born in Nantyglo Monmouthshire in 1886 and, givng up his employment as a colliery flsmith, enlisted in the 10th South Wales Borderers in November 1914.
At the time of the investiture CSM Williams had not recovered from his severe wounds and during the presentation, the wound in his arm opened up with the result that medical attention had to be given before he could leave the palace.
A month after his 50th birthday, CSM Williams is presented to Edward VIII during the kings "Something must be done" visit to South Wales in November 1936.
