Southern Harmony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Southern Harmony is a shape note hymn and tune book compiled by William Walker.
Although singing from the Southern Harmony is finding renewed interest at present, for many years it survived in one annual singing held each fourth Sunday in May at the Marshall County courthouse in Benton, Kentucky.
The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion was compiled by William "Singin' Billy" Walker and printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1835.

Introduction to the 4th Edition of Southern
Happily for the participants - and for the musical historian - the music, the hymns, and the notation seem to have been considered an entity, for all were warmly embraced in the camp meetings.
In the Southern Harmony and many of its American predecessors and contemporaries, as well as numerous English publications, the melody is in the tenor voice, written on the G clef.
This music has been described as music for singers rather than for listeners, and certainly it is more enjoyable to be part of the singing ensemble than just to be sitting on the fringe listening, although there is a certain pleasure in that also.

William Walker’s Southern Harmony, first published in 1835, was the most popular tune book of the nineteenth century, containing 335 sacred songs, dominated by the folk hymns of oral tradition and written in the old four-shape notation that was for generations the foundation of musical teaching in rural America.
Walker became a singing master, and Southern Harmony was compiled for his students in hundreds of singing schools all over North and South Carolina and Georgia and in eastern Tennessee.
Southern Harmony reached Kentucky in the company of music-loving pioneers, and today an annual singing in Benton, Kentucky, remains the only such occasion on which Southern Harmony is consistently the source of the music.

While that album set the blueprint for the rest of their 10+ year career, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, their sophomore release, was their true masterpiece.
The album as a whole sounds more Southern, which is slightly obvious if you take the time to look at the title of the album, and even the cover.
There is plenty of acoustic guitars, organ, and harmonica to add variety to the songs, along with the down-and-dirty rockers that are scattered through the album, making it a more varied and an enjoyable listen compared to their first.

But while the focus is undeniably on the band's musical chemistry, Southern Harmony also boasts a strong collection of songs, striking a perfect balance between the concise Shake Your Money Maker and their later, more jam-oriented records.
While there aren't as many obvious singles as on their debut album, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is the best expression of the Crowes' ability to take a classic, tried-and-true sound and make it their own.
The Southern Harmony has the Crowes dynamics that all the fans would come to love over the 90's and it has VERY accessible tunes for someone who has never heard the band before.

Still, the Crowes are a Southern band that plays rock, so there is a buried blues base to their music.
But it is a testament to the skill, intelligence and force behind the Crowes' music to say that their posing doesn't matter – or really, their posing is what matters most of all.
Because they instinctively recognize a musical pose that gives them everything from a way to dress and a way to act onstage to a whole vocabulary of riffs that exactly fit their talent and experience.

Karen F., Waltham, MA The Black Crowes have struck again with their second album, "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" from Def American Recordings.
And I don't think you should judge music on, specifically, its commercial appeal and where it is on the charts, 'cause at the end of the day, who really cares?" And as for the name "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion," Chris Robinson says "I'm sure there's a meaning.
The tape starts off with "Sting Me," "Remedy," and "Thorn in My Pride" which display the amazing musical growth of the Crowes since their first album ("Shake Your Money Maker") which was released in Spring, 1990.

 The Black Crowes Album Reviews
The album begins with “Sting Me,” a greasy Southern rocker with a singable soul chorus, while “Remedy” (the album's hit single) was a great party song featuring ascending riffs, Robinson’s cocky “baby baby” lyrics, some great guitar, and a chorus that kicks you right in the ass.
Finally, “My Morning Song” is a good ol’ Southern sing along that's one of the album's best songs, while “Time Will Tell” is a light Bob Marley cover that, though it can’t hold a candle to “Hard To Handle,” nevertheless provides a nice low-key ending to this bluesy, soulful, and rocking album.
But true fans of the band who patiently persevered (the album sneaks up on you only after repeat plays) were amply rewarded, and the band still packed houses on the road, fighting the good rock n' roll fight in the grand tradition of the Allman Brothers Band.

Southern Harmony and Musical Companion acts like a bridge between the brief yet powerful Shake Your Moneymaker and later, more free flowing albums like Three Snakes & One Charm and By Your Side.
And, for listeners not particularly acquainted with their music, the album when paired with the debut is a lovely primer and a very necessary addition to a complete rock music collection.
Despite the admittedly brief runtime, Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is darned near perfect.

The Black Crowes are either a blatant Stones ripoff, or one of the last saviors of good old fashioned straight ahead rock and roll left on the planet.
Perhaps the intent was for a more relaxed sounding album, but one of the main selling points of Black Crowes music previously had been the intensity with which it was delievered, and that is severely lacking here.
The problem with Three Snakes is not the music, as much as it lacks the energy that can only come from the Black Crowes, and as a result doesn't have the uniqueness of their brand of rock and roll.

The Crowes had clearly grown up, moving beyond simple blues raveups into more soulful material; Chris Robinson's singing is more expansive and detailed, his lyrics tend toward the spiritual.

The Black Crowes was the opening act for Z.Z. Top when Robinson, an outspoken critic of commercial sponsorship of the arts, decided to give voice to that opposition.
The Robinson brothers wrote the nine original tracks on ``The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,'' which also includes a cover of Bob Marley's ``Time Will Tell.'' Robinson said the album was ``really kind of put together...in a couple of weekends'' and was recorded in eight days in the group's hometown of Atlanta.
Robinson feels the Crowes need to get about five or six albums under its belt before the group can be judged as to what it's all about.
