SparkNotes: Spanish Tragedy: Context   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Tragedy had first achieved greatness in ancient Greece, in Attica (the region surrounding Athens), where it developed out of religious festivals that celebrated the cult of the god Dionysus.
This brief flowering of tragedy was followed by an extremely long hiatus during which tragedy was virtually absent from the drama of the Western world, with the exception of some crude Roman attempts to imitate the Greek masters.
And tragedy was almost entirely absent from the Christian drama, which generally tended to focus on celebrating the morality of Christ or, especially in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, inculcating morals through the use of morality plays.

Furthermore, there are verbal parallels so close to the Spanish Tragedy as to leave no doubt that in places Shakespeare was merely revising the text of Kyd.
And finally there are unexplained scenes—the Polonius-Laertes and the Polonius-Reynaldo scenes—for which there is little excuse; these scenes are not in the verse style of Kyd, and not beyond doubt in the style of Shakespeare.
It is not merely the "guilt of a mother" that cannot be handled as Shakespeare handled the suspicion of Othello, the infatuation of Antony, or the pride of Coriolanus.

The full title runs, The Spanish Tragedie containing the Lamentable End of Don Horatio and Bel-iinperia; with the Pitiful Death of Old Hieronimo, and the play is commonly referred to by Henslowe and other contemporaries as Hieronimo.
Kyds next work was in all probability the tragedy of Soliman and Perseda, written perhaps in 1588 and licensed for the press in 1592, which, although anonymous, is assigned to him on strong internal evidence by Mr Boas.
Curiously enough, The Spanish Tragedy, which was the earliest stage-play of the great period, was also the most popular, and held its own right through the careers of Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Fletcher.

The Spanish Tragedy, perhaps the most popular and influential play of the period, has been attributed to Kyd on the strength of an obscure reference in Thomas Heywood's Apology for Actors (1612), which itself was not discovered until 1773.
The A text is the older of the two and was written at the time of the composition of The Spanish Tragedy as part of the forepiece Don Horatio and may have been by Kyd or is at least Kydian(?).
Ultimately, this is a sad book because, although the author demonstrates an energetic and informed desire to provide a new and comprehensive assessment of Kyd's career and canon and does succeed in the areas I have indicated, he is, in the main, undermined by his fascination for conjecture and speculation.

Thomas Kyd Biography / Biography of Thomas Kyd Main Biography
The English dramatist Thomas Kyd (1558-1594) is best known for "The Spanish Tragedy," a play that was a great popular success and did much to influence the course of English tragedy of the late Renaissance.
It is the earliest example in English of the "revenge play," or "tragedy of blood," which was later developed and refined by such dramatists as Shakespeare, George Chapman, and John Webster.
Its exciting action culminates in a cleverly contrived scene in which the protagonist stages a "play" which turns out to be horrifyingly real: the "actors" use their swords in earnest, with the result that all principal characters--heroes and villains--are disposed of in a spectacularly bloody fashion.

The Spanish Tragedy is not without stylistic and structural faults, but it remains remarkably coherent by comparison with the other surviving dramas of the 1580s, even in the textually corrupted form in which it has been transmitted.
The Kydian part, which is continuous with The Spanish Tragedy, reveals Kyd as a practitioner of the two-part play on a footing with Marlowe.
The Tragedy occupies four chapters, which include some fine remarks on its counterpointing of the 'supernatural and human theatres' and on its stylistic variety -- a relief after the critical clichés about its 'monotony'.

The role that madness plays in almost all revenge tragedies, is a vital one; it provides a framework for the malcontent to be converted by the environment into the avenger.
In almost all revenge tragedies, the malcontent takes the form of a renaissance man or woman who is confronted with a problem (the crime that has to be avenged).
It is interesting to note the role that soliloquies have in the revenge tragedy; they are predominantly used by characters who are in a state of indecision when faced with the central dilemma of the revenge tragedy.
