		His family escaped from East Germany in 1948 (as recounted in his song "Renegade" on the album Steppenwolf Seven), resettling in Hanover, West Germany, before moving to Canada in 1958.
		He joined a blues rock group known as The Sparrow in 1965, which had moderate success in Canada before augmenting its line-up and changing its name to Steppenwolf in 1967, which had international success with songs such as "Born to Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride", "Monster", and "Rock Me".

		Steppenwolf is a great band that formed in Los Angeles in 1967 and proved to have a very broad appeal, and for a very long time.

		The John Sparrow are decidedly not a part of the recent faux-rock ‘n roll movement that has made it hip to equate genuine talent with drunken rollicking and vague drug references.
		The band’s enthusiasm is apparent to the audience as Richardson commands the crowd to move closer to the stage and “fucking dance!” It is impossible to ignore the John Sparrow groove, one that causes their songs to strike one’s ears as immediately recognizable, yet unswervingly original.
