The Spine is the tenth full-length They Might Be Giants studio album.
The album was released on July 5, 2004 in the UK, and July 13 in the US (see 2004 in music) on Idlewild/Rounder Records.
It was released in conjunction with The Spine Surfs Alone EP and includes two tracks from the previously released EP, Indestructible Object.

i'm sure the quality of the spine will be much better than the quality of the last phish album.
Or it could be one of the standard reasons, like the other songs not fitting on the album, or interfering somehow with the flow of the album, or the album simply works better in its current order.
I haven't seen any evidence that there are going to be any, or any covers aside from "Caroline, No" that they've been playing a lot in recent live shows, but their cover of "Yeh Yeh" kind of came out of nowhere a few months before the release of Mink Car.

I mean, yes, it's going to lead to more people downloading whole albums for free, but it's also going to lead to EVEN MORE people going out and buying some of the band's stuff, in my opinion.
It's been too long in the wait, and I would love to hear the alternate version (after the official SPINE release date, of course).
"Spine" and "Spines" are even shorter, as you are no doubt aware.

We actually have an EP that just came out in tandem with The Spine called The Spine Surfs Alone that's basically a bunch of sick, macabre songs; they're pretty consistently dark, but they're really unimportant songs, for the most part.
I think in some ways, a lot of them are great songs, and there's something about them that's super special, but I wouldn't want to read what a rock critic would say about them.

Dubbed "The Spine," the set is due this summer from Idlewild/Rounder.
Ok, so come the release of The Spine this EP might be a little redundant, but could be a great introduction to TMBG's current sound for any newcomer.

Except for the last track, "Canada Haunts Me," everything here is strong enough to warrant inclusion on the official full-length release, and may have made that CD even better.
The Surfs tracks are admittedly quirky, but then, that's what one would expect from this band.
Regardless, The Spine Surfs Alone is a worthy addition to the overall catalog.

Definitely go buy this tomorrow or order it on Amazon, or download it from They Might Be Giants dot com.
But get the extra EP, "The Spine Surfs Alone", too, because that's got some great tracks on it, as well ("Skullivan" and "I'm All You Can Think About" being two instant classics of the "The Spine Surfs Alone" EP).
This was stop number 2 on their tour in support of the Spine and they're breaking in a new drummer to boot, and I'm pleased to report it was a very rocking performance.

I was hoping more for a return to the days of FLOOD, but I guess you can't go home after all.
Some of the songs on The Spine are absolutely brilliant (Experimental Film - It's Kick'n in Ya - Museum of Idiots - just to name a few of my favs) and then others are just wishy washy, about nothing, and they're to bloody slow!
Not their greatest - but if it is a testiment to the songs to come than I feel that THEY are on the right track!!

The Spine (and The Spine Surfs Alone) - They Might be Giants
Smile was just acquired for Christmas and I haven't really listened to the Modest Mouse disc much (a lot of it sounded good, but some tracks sounded so out of place that I don't know if it will adversely affect my overall enjoyment of the release in the long-run).
I prefer TMBG's earlier stuff, but I think Spine on the whole is their best since John Henry (personally, I think Factory Showroom is their weakest by far, but that's mainly Elektra's fault if my info is correct...another story for another day).
