Laws of cricket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The laws of cricket are a set of rules framed by the Marylebone Cricket Club which serve to standardise the format of cricket matches across the world to ensure uniformity and fairness.
In 1755 there is further reference to the laws being revised by "Several Cricket Clubs, particularly the Star and Garter in Pall Mall", followed by a revision of the Laws by "a Committee of Noblemen and Gentlemen of Kent, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Middlesex and London at the Star and Garter" in 1774.
A printed form of the laws was published in 1775 and a further revision to the laws was undertaken by a similar body of Noblemen and Gentlemen of Kent, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Middlesex and London in 1786.

 The spirit of the laws
A virtuous law should be a particular expression of a higher law or be in harmony with the higher law.
In contrast, a vicious law troubles the conscience of a virtuous man and places him in the troubling dilemma of obeying the law or obeying his conscience.
A law which is passed because of the pressures of private interests and which serves those interests at the expense of the commonweal is arbitrary and vicious.

Montesquieu: The Spirit of Laws: Book 1
Laws, in their most general signification, are the necessary relations arising from the nature of things.
The law of nations is naturally founded on this principle, that different nations ought in time of peace to do one another all the good they can, and in time of war as little injury as possible, without prejudicing their real interests.
Law in general is human reason, inasmuch as it governs all the inhabitants of the earth: the political and civil laws of each nation ought to be only the particular cases in which human reason is applied.

To the former of these he answers, by placing in one view the several passages in the Spirit of Laws directly levelled against the doctrines of Spinoza; and then he replies to the objections that have been made to those passages, upon which this injurious charge is founded.
Hence he laid down this position, that there were laws of justice and equity before the establishment of positive laws: hence also he has proved that all beings had laws; that even before their creation they had possible laws; and that God himself had laws, that is, the laws which he himself had made.
Besides, as honour has its laws and rules, as it knows not how to submit; as it depends in a great measure on a man's own caprice, and not on that of another person; it can be found only in countries in which the constitution is fixed, and where they are governed by settled laws.

For example, the meaning of these laws could be twisted in various ways, as in Asimov's stories; it could turn out that in retrospect, we wouldn't want robots to follow these exact laws at all.
Analog implementation of the 3 laws: Digital computers don’t have much of a hope of functioning like us, digital logic processing does not work in the varying world of, us human with are analog processing might be a better model, so AI running of Anolog processors (or composite analog digital processor) might be the future.
The only law I consider safe for robots is that a robot may not do anything that its owner or owners have not explicitly ordered it to do.

Republican Government: Montesquieu, Spirit of Laws, bk. 20, CHS. 1--8
We see that in countries [Holland] where the people move only by the spirit of commerce, they make a traffic of all the humane, all the moral virtues; the most trifling things, those which humanity would demand, are there done, or there given, only for money.
The spirit of trade produces in the mind of a man a certain sense of exact justice, opposite, on the one hand, to robbery, and on the other to those moral virtues which forbid our always adhering rigidly to the rules of private interest, and suffer us to neglect this for the advantage of others.
This appears by two laws of the code of the Burgundians; one of which inflicted a penalty on every barbarian who presumed to show a stranger the house of a Roman; and the other decreed, that whoever received a stranger should be indemnified by the inhabitants, every one being obliged to pay his proper proportion.

In every government there are three sorts of power; the legislative; the executive, in respect to things dependent on the law of nations; and the executive, in regard to things that depend on the civil law.
His person should be sacred, because as it is necessary for the good of the state to prevent the legislative body from rendering themselves arbitrary, the moment he is accused or tried, there is an end of liberty.

Are Old Testament laws still binding on Christians?
The spirit of the law is (in moral terms) that we repent of sin and (in Christological terms) that we partake of the sinless Bread of life.
The spirit of the Sabbath law does not automatically produce the letter – but Christians are to focus on the spirit.
Once we recognize that some OT laws, although still valid in purpose, are obsolete in the letter, then we are free to accept the implications of what Paul wrote in Colossians 2:16.

Finally, the Spirit of the Game rests on always acknowledging that soccer is, after all, a game; It is only a game, and life goes on after it is over, but while the game proceeds, many of life's normal rules and external standards are suspended in favor of the Laws and Spirit of the Game.

Principal Laws, Gifts of the Spirit (S1)
If the believer lives a carnal life, not living in union with the Holy Spirit, there is a great danger that the gifts are manipulated by his fleshly nature, or even by evil- or unclean spirits, if he has fallen a victim to them.
The believer has the responsibilty to allow the Holy Spirit of God to continually inspire his spirit with fresh insight, faith and power and to keep his intentions in ministry pure and holy.
A life of prayer and intimate communion in the Spirit with the Lord is of vital importance to be sure that the gifts, when used, are controled by the Holy Spirit.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Baron de Montesquieu
In this second work the author studies human laws in their relationships with the government, climate, and general character of the country, its customs, and its religion.
He undertakes, not to examine various laws and discover their meaning, but to point out their underlying principles and to lay down the conditions which must be verified if such laws are to work for the happiness of man in society.
Montesquieu's reputation became universal, and he was able to enjoy peacefully the homage it brought him until his death, for which he prepared himself by receiving the sacraments of the Church, and showing every outward mark of perfect obedience to her laws.
