DiGriz is the "Stainless Steel Rat," a character who both commits and foils schemes of planetary revolutions, finds himself an unwilling agent in alien wars, and is a master of grand theft all over the universe thirty-three thousand years in the future.
As his epic is not recounted in chronological order in the books as they were published, it's easier to tell the tale based on events in the novels as they reveal his unsavory history from the beginning to the, ah, his retirement.

Stainless Steel Rat is probably one of the first "anti-heroes" as Jim De Griz (the Stainless Steel Rat) is a criminal but also the hero of the stories.
Stainless Steel Rat is probably most famous in the UK for the 2000AD comic book conversions that were drawn by Judge Dredd co-creator Carlos Ezquerra and were very succesful in the 1980's.
I asked some 2000AD friends of mine for some memories of Steel Rat and this is what they had to say "Slippery", "But non-rusting", "Dead ringer for James Coburn", "A criminal mastermind who becomes both a brilliant husband and father while saving both the world and time from evil people.

First there was "The Stainless Steel Rat", our introduction to Slippery Jim DiGriz, aka the Stainless Steel Rat, a high-tech, futuristic conman and thief, who is caught after a long and successful career by the galactic special corps, and recruited to join them because it takes a thief to catch a thief.
When the Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted was published I was lucky enough to get a job in my school's library in the back room where books were prepared for library use or repaired.

The Stainless Steel Rat books are a little different, in that the humour is less wacky and more situational.
The Rat himself, Slippery Jim DiGriz, is a con-man, and as such, generally smarter than anyone whose path he crosses.
Otherwise, The Stainless Steel Rat Joins the Circus, which is after all an essentially formulaic piece of work, would be pretty thin going.

"The Stainless Steel Rat" was the first book in this series (there are prequels, but this WAS the first) and like any fine classic, it lays the foundations for all the others.
Harry Harrison is certainly a diverse and talented author and has produced many fine books away from the "Rat" series as demonstrated in the superb "West of Eden" epic fantasies, the "Hammer and the Cross" books, plus many, many others.
If I could, I would sue Mr Harrison for all my wasted teenage years spent alone in my room reading his well spun tales instead of wrestling with rampant females in the back seats of cars and fumbling with the intricacies of their sheer and scanty undergarments.
