In 1980, Seinfeld was cast in the sitcom Benson, but was fired after just a few episodes; he returned to stand-up with a vengeance, and a year later made his first appearance on The Tonight Show, winning over host Johnny Carson.
Premiering in 1991 under the name The Seinfeld Chronicles, the show was an immediate critical hit but fared poorly in the ratings; known as simply Seinfeld from its second episode onward, the series gradually gained momentum, and NBC agreed to an order of six more episodes, followed in its third year by 13 more.
Throughout much of the decade, it remained the highest-rated sitcom on television, but in 1998 Seinfeld pulled the plug on the show, despite reports that NBC offered him a staggering $5 million per episode to continue for another 22-episode season.

Co-written and co-created by Seinfeld and Larry David (who later went on to plumb greater depths of misanthropy with Curb Your Enthusiasm), it revolutionised American sitcoms with its cynical and mature comedy, and its ability to find comic gems in the most mundane situations (one classic episode is set entirely in a mall car-park).
There's about 30 mins of outtakes/bloopers, commentary tracks on selected episodes ("Yada, yada, yada"), a featurette about Kramer's character and the real life inspiration for him, deleted scenes ("In the vault"), some stand-up footage from Jerry that wasn't used in the shows, and TV spots, trailers etc.
Seinfeld is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of American sitcoms, and this long-delayed box set goes a long way in demonstrating why.

 Amazon.co.uk: Books: Annie Hall
Annie Hall is Woody Allen's masterpiece, and indeed any film that can beat Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope to the 1977 Best Picture Oscar must be pretty damn good, and it is. This is Woody Allen's most autobiographical movie, and the lead character of Alvy Singer is a pretty thin disguise.
Singer used to be a gag writer for comedians, but made a career decision to do his own comic stand-up routine.
The relationship between Alvy Singer and Annie Hall is portrayed with the closest attention to detail, so that whether it is waiting in line to see a movie, buying books for one another, persuading Annie to take up an academic course or photographing Alvy during a very amusing lobster incident, the result is highly effective.
