The beginnings of the fire were caught on videotape by cameraman Brian Butler for WPRI-TV of Providence, for a planned piece on nightclub safety being reported by Jeff Derderian, a WPRI news reporter who is also a part-owner of The Station.
The Station fire exceeded the death toll of 88 in the March 25, 1990, Happyland Fire in the Bronx, New York City.
The worst nightclub fire was November 28, 1942, in Boston at the Cocoanut Grove, where 492 died after paper decorations caught fire.

 Fire Safety
The Station nightclub fire brought the issue of flame-resistant acoustic materials to the forefront of fire safety in recent months.Ā  Many places of public assembly in Massachusetts who regularly showcase live music utilize such acoustic materials without any objective means of determining whether these materials are fire-resistant, or worse, fire-stimulant.
Fire departments must also have the opportunity to improve equipment and update apparatus within their stations if they are to be effective during both good fiscal times and bad.
Fire companies may also be required to arrive at a fire without adequate numbers because many communities are not filling the positions given up by retiring fire fighters or losses from attrition.
