  The Stone Roses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stone Roses were formed in Manchester during the early-1980s by guitarist John Squire and vocalist Ian Brown.
The Stone Roses' serious sense of making a statement saw them identified with punks (aided by the fact that graffiti stating 'The Stone Roses' was seen right throughout Manchester when they released their first album), though the bands' image was also a combination of sweetness, fiery moodiness, intelligence, artistry and soul.
The Stone Roses' also made nods towards psychedelia, most notably 'Fools Gold' and 'Elephant Stone', arguably their equivalents of The Byrds' 'Eight miles high' and 'So you wanna be a rock and roll star', although The Byrds used jazz as a template, which isn't noticeably evident in The Stone Roses music.

 The Stone Roses (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stone Roses is the debut album by The Stone Roses, released in March 1989.
The Stone Roses had been formed in 1984, yet 1989 saw their debut full length release (the band had released a handful of singles in the previous years, on a variety of labels).
The Roses recorded the album with John Leckie, a notable producer who had worked with Pink Floyd on Dark Side of the Moon and it was released by Silvertone, a division of Zomba Records created to work with what they called "new rock" acts.

The Stone Roses received rave reviews and soon a crop of similar-sounding bands appeared in the U.K. By the end of the summer, the Stone Roses were perceived as leading a wave of bands that fused rock & roll and acid house culture.

 TrouserPress.com :: Stone Roses
Originally a mod combo known as English Rose (a Jam reference), Stone Roses galvanized their city's — and, by media extension, nation's — Ecstasy-driven post-punk subculture with an utterly brilliant 1989 album of chiming, atmospheric and winningly arrogant folked-up rock.
Stylishly produced by John Leckie and dressed in a Jackson Pollock-styled splatter cover painting by guitarist John Squire, the album is a stunningly well-realized debut, a record-as-cultural-identity one-off as cataclysmic as The Smiths or Ziggy Stardust.
Evidently more intent on driving associates around the bend than reaping a commercial harvest, Stone Roses produced only a couple of singles (the first, "Fools Gold," was added to a second US version of the first album) during its lengthy hibernation period.

 BBC - Radio 1 - Keeping It Peel - Stone Roses
Their debut album was hailed in all quarters as a guitar/pop classic, and as the Manchester "baggy" scene infiltrated Britain's consciousness, Stone Roses - alongside the funkier, grubbier Happy Mondays - were perceived to be leaders of the flare-wearing pack.
As if this was not enough, Stone Roses were back in court when they tried to leave Silvertone, who took an injunction out against their valuable protégés.
This prevented any further Stone Roses material from being released, even though the band eventually won their case and signed to Geffen Records for a reported $4 million.

Yes, "complete" Stone Roses is something of a misnomer but it must be recalled that the "complete" refers to their singles from their inception until the last decent thing they have done prior to the mediocre second coming era recordings.
They are raw and powerful and, as I see it, are somewhat to the Stone Roses as This is Your My Bloody Valentine is to MBV; a gritty, pseudo-punk, slightly dark, and perhaps even fragmentarily reminiscent of a cross between the better goth stuff from that time and the Cramps.
So, whether you are a hard-core Roses fan, a Madchester revivalist, or neophyte groove-meister, this collection is great to groove to or simply as an historical collection of some rare material of one of the most influential bands that barely made a ripple here in the States.
