Topic: The Stone Tape

The Stone Tape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stone Tape is a television play written by Nigel Kneale, directed by Peter Sasdy and starring Michael Bryant, Jane Asher and Iain Cuthbertson.
There is one particularly frightening sequence when, in a darkened hallway, the "stone tape" apparently plays back the image of a pair of what are obviously eyes, glowing red in the gloom.
The Stone Tape was a significant influence on John Carpenter's 1987 film Prince of Darkness.

Stone, who is no longer a police officer, said his tape is marketed to the casual drinker -- someone who may get stopped even though they're below the legal limit, and who may not know their rights.
She said, after watching the tape, she thought the purpose was to break the law.

 The Stone Tape - review
Peter hypothesises that the ghost is simply a recording of some past traumatic event somehow encoded into the material of the room itself, hence the "stone tape".
An unremarkable mouldy bare stone room with a staircase leading nowhere except a blank ceiling - this is the focus of the hauntings and is a weirdly unsettling locale.
The staff at the BFI should be congratulated for this as well as for their upcoming release of the similarly legendary TV version of "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to you" by M. James directed by Jonathan Miller.

The Stone Tape was commissioned as a ghost story for Christmas in 1972, not part of the BBC series of the same name, which were typically adapted from the short stories of MR James and Charles Dickens, but as a single 90 minute original script.
The Stone Tape features a traditionally creaky and derelict old house purchased and renovated by an electronics company in which they are planning on housing their new research division for the development of a new recording media.
Still, it's pointless giving The Stone Tape a low mark because of this when it reflects a decision taken at the time within the BBC as to how it was to be filmed to which all relevant parties agreed.

Matter, he suggests, may be able to absorb an emotional charge that can be triggered to replay the moment of its imprinting directly into the medium of the human mind; that, in essence, is the reality behind the ghost and the nature of the 'stone tape'.
As far as THE STONE TAPE's concerned this means that Peter Sasdy's fluent, ambitious direction pushes the medium right to its limits and often exposes them.
But nonetheless, THE STONE TAPE justifies its reputation as a landmark achievement in TV drama, in the genre, and in Kneale's career.

And rather than insisting upon the pre-eminence of the rational (and therefore also of the human subject alleged to be the privileged bearer of reason), Kneale shows that an enquiry into the nature of what the world is like is also inevitably an unravelling of what we are.
It quickly becomes apparent that the building is haunted: one of their number, a female computer programmer, is particularly 'sensitive' to the ghost (a servant girl from the nineteenth century who died in a mysterious fall).

The main problem with the Stone tape theory has always been that nobody can find a satisfactory explanation as to how or why the recording actually takes places or how the solid structure and fabric of a location is able to retain the events that took place.
It is possible to reinforce our case for the existence of a ‘Water tape’ still further by examining some aspects of ghostly activity that are often associated with the former stone tape theory.
The Stone tape idea has only been tested in a very limited way and no evidence other than anecdotal has been put forward to support he notion of solid matter being able to record events.

Described by the Guinness Book of Classic British TV as "one of the most frightening pieces of television ever made", Nigel Kneale's The Stone Tape is an artefact from a lost age of television and a quite superb piece of work.
It is a difficult trick to underpin the supernatural with believable concepts and not lose something of the resultant suspense, yet The Stone Tape finds the most affecting path between the two.
The Stone Tape reveals to us that contemporary programming is hell-bent on presupposing the viewers' personal opinions and shaping the resulting dramas accordingly.

Nigel Kneale/Peter Sasdy: The Stone Tape
It's typical of Kneale's macabre sensibility that The Stone Tape -- the bleakest of all his works -- was written in response to a commission for a Christmas Night ghost story.
It's perhaps worth noting that the practice of taping the voices of the dead had achieved a certain notoriety in the early 1970s through the work of the Latvian psychologist Konstatin Raudive, documented in his book Breakthrough.
Lethbridge's theory was circulating during the early seventies - indeed, he died the year before The Stone Tape was written - and it's tempting to assume that Kneale assimilated it.

Jigsaw Lounge - The Stone Tape
The Stone Tape is typical Nigel Kneale — the oddball Manx brain behind Quatermass and Halloween III, and the inspiration for most of John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness — in that it’s fascinating but flawed, at once over-ambitious and under-developed.
The stones can, under the right circumstances, ‘play back’ historical events they’ve ‘witnessed’ and ‘recorded,’ including the death of a Victorian chambermaid - the playback manifesting itself in the form of a haunting.
The film stands as a real historical curio, balanced on the edge of the bold new electronic era (the scientists are always fretting about the Japanese, their rivals in innovation) but with one foot planted firmly in the past — perhaps even the distant past.
