There is a fear of an over-sentimentalized story due to the appearance of a few watery-eyed old men, the 'nice' music by Badalamenti and seeing the word 'Disney' in the opening credits, but this fear dissolves the further away from home Alvin gets.
This is certainly not the case and TSS belongs with The Elephant Man in that it is simply told, beautifully photographed, expressively acted by its principal and ineffably moving.

This might not be the kind of story you’d expect from David Lynch; for weeks I’ve been having fun telling people that the new David Lynch movie was rated G and produced by Disney, then watching their puzzled reactions.
As she leaves the house and Alvin’s next-door neighbor distracts herself with tanning mirrors and Snoballs, a wind begins to blow, and the camera slowly approaches the side window of Alvin’s house just in time to catch the sound of him falling to the floor.

The various encounters Alvin has while on his travels each reveal a new facet to his character, whether it be through sharing pearls of wisdom with a teenage runaway or a fellow W.W.II veteran, or by consoling a distraught commuter who keeps crashing into rogue deer while on her daily travels to and from work.
What makes this film all the more incredible is that the story is a true one - the real life Straight died in the mid 90s several years after making the trip, and the movie is dedicated to him and his family.
The Straight Story encapsulates the sound of the American soul, with a richness and grace and uncommon delicacy.
