Hyde had a song upon his lips as he compounded the draught, and as he drank it, pledged the dead man. The pangs of transformation had not done tearing him, before Henry Jekyll, with streaming tears of gratitude and remorse, had fallen upon his knees and lifted his clasped hands to God.

The fact that Hyde is physically smaller than Jekyll could be symbolic of his moral deficiency or merely reflect the notion that he is only a "part" of Jekyll; but the difference in size is convenient as a plot device because it prevents others from suspecting that Hyde and Jekyll are really the same person.

What will seem strange to the people of today is that the readers of 1886 at first had no knowledge that the Jekyll and Hyde characters are, in fact, the same person.
Utterson then visits Jekyll to make sure he is not covering for Hyde, and Jekyll tells Utterson that he has received a note from Hyde saying that he will no longer return to Jekyll’s life.
Prostitutes are the typical victims for Hyde in the films, this is partly influenced by the Jack the Ripper murders, which took place around the time of the play, leading people to believe that the Ripper had been influenced by the play.
