Billy Joel : The Stranger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The results aren't necessarily revelatory, since he covered so much ground on Turnstiles, but the commercialism of The Stranger is a bit of a surprise.
Joel balanced such radio-ready material with a series of New York vignettes, seemingly inspired by Springsteen's working-class fables and clearly intended to be the artistic centerpieces of the album.
They do provide The Stranger with the feel of a concept album, yet there is no true thematic connection between the pieces, and his lyrics are often vague or mean-spirited.

 The Album
All tracks were recorded at Golden Track Studios (Escondido, CA) between February and August 2006.  Produced by Thomas Dellavechia and STRANGER.
"There's a difference between putting out an album and putting out a cd," states Ornelas (singer), "a CD is a tangible object that can be picked up, put down and thrown away.
The long awaited album covers a wide spectrum of musical colorings.  Giving a little something to each type of listener.

Produced by Phil Ramone, The Stranger took those who had written Joel off as a one-hit wonder by surprise ("Just the Way You Are" was among the biggest hits of 1977) and it remains a solid introduction to Joel's restless muse at a crucial point in his career.
However, the album listener is not burdened by the pains of artistic growth.
The centerpiece of the album is "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" which tells the story of the rise and fall of Brenda and Eddie.

Bob Seger - Stranger In Town
He was, after all, practically a rock & roll archetype: an authentic hardworking, hard-traveling man, a gambler whose best-selling album was the one on which he reviewed his life, adding up the score and deciding whether or not he was too old to play anymore.
His voice -- hoarse enough to carry across Fender feedback‹the abrupt starts and stops, the grandiose characters he played (the gladiator of "Sunburst," Ishmael to the Arab of "Ship of Fools") were all part of the equipment he'd developed for the stage: the big gesture and the obvious drama that are pitched to the balcony.
This artist is used to being a stranger in town, used to trading on his abilities istead of his reputation -- and now that he's got one, he seems more fearful of presuming on it.

Phantom Stranger then turned their attention to finding a bass player that could pound out the bottom end and be a positive force in the band.
Since Phantom Stranger reformed, the band has returned to the Chicago and Milwaukee club scene, released their debut album and are working on a second album.
Not only has Phantom Stranger written quality music in a style that still speaks from the heart and shoots from the hip, but they are presenting it to a market gone stagnant and in desperate need of a swift kick in the ass.

Richie worked on his second solo album in 1997 and the fruits of his work were released in December 1997 in Japan and in March 1998 in the rest of the world.
The album was produced by Don Was (who had previously produced for The Rolling Stones) and Richie wrote most of the songs with namesake Richie Supa.
Stranger was constantly very high quality and a bit more original, - as some songs here remind a lot of other songs - but although Undiscovered Soul is somewhat weaker than it, it is just as well a great album.

BILLY JOEL-The Stranger   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The album (which was his commercial breakthrough) features all of Billy Joel's strengths: a sure sense of melody and pop songcraft, affecting balladry, nimble piano playing, and dry humor.
The album's first half concludes with the rousing song suite "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," which is about two old high school friends who reunite to discuss their present-day lives and fondly reminisce about days gone by.
The album then steps up the tempo with the superb "Only the Good Die Young," a bouncy rocker (with tongue planted firmly in cheek) about a lustful rebel unsuccessfully attempting to get a proper Catholic schoolgirl to succumb to his advances.

'Sup Magazine // Entrance - Wandering Stranger
His first album, The Kingdom of Heaven Must Be Taken By Storm, had its bright spots, but it didn't quite deliver on the promise of that night at Tonic.
Although too loyal to traditional blues structures to be considered a part of the so-called "freak folk" scene that includes Banhart and Joanna Newsome, Blakeslee nonetheless shares their old-soul spirit, and is a logical companion on their backwoods, Appalachian revival.
Wandering Stranger, filled with lyrics about finding something better in life, filled with lyrics like, "The girls on the train in New York City frown so much they could never be pretty, darling," makes me want to ditch the city, hop on a bus, and go rediscover the decent things America has to offer.

On the cover of the band's eponymous album, both Joel and Small were dressed as barbarians; in an interview on the back of the album, Joel claimed to forget the name of his previous band and stated that he only "sweated" two things -- perfecting his sound and the war in Southeast Asia.
Joel's next album would prove to be the make-or-break point for his career, and the resulting album, The Stranger, catapulted him into superstardom.
In the spring of 1980, Joel released Glass Houses, theoretically a harder-edged album that was a response to the punk and new wave movement.

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - Stranger Things (Album Review)
Granted, there are moments on Stranger Things when New Bohemians sounds a little tentative in its pursuits, which isn’t a terribly surprising notion to consider, given that it’s been 16 years since the band officially has issued a new album.
For the most part, however, Stranger Things settles into a comfortably relaxed space that is poised at the crossroads where The Eagles, Blondie, the Grateful Dead, and ’70s-style RandB meet.
As Brickell sings about a final effort to salvage a relationship that has gone sour, New Bohemians creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that perfectly frames the yearning in her voice, and the result is a song that ought to provide the ensemble with the perfect vehicle for retaking the pop charts.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : The Stranger
Everyone knows the singles from this album like the back of their hand; the romantic bonbon "Just The Way You Are," the rocker "Only The Good Die Young" or Joel's anthem for Anthony, "Movin' Out." Those songs are classics, but they aren't even the best tracks on the album.
However the crown jewel of The Stranger is "Scenes from Italian Restaurant." This song is Joel's magnum opus, eight minutes of pure bliss.
This album is personal to him because of that.

Billy Joel / The Stranger album review [plus 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant' song lyrics]
Album Review: Billy Joel probably reached his artistic peak in 1976 on the album Turnstiles, with its high-concept lyrics and sweeping melodies.
But it was his next album—The Stranger— that would put him over the top with fans.
The Stranger featured a more hit-oriented sound than any of his previous albums, and intentionally so, since the other albums had not exactly made him a household name.

Billboard.com - Discography - American Music Club - The Restless Stranger
The Restless Stranger is generally omitted from the official American Music Club discography; their first album, its existence was consistently disavowed by the band members in press releases, interviews and the like.
Although it is by far the weakest release in the AMC canon, the album does have its merits; while the production and arrangements never jell with Mark Eitzel's songs, there are fleeting moments here which hint at the eclectic brilliance to come.
And already Eitzel is a sharp storyteller -- years later, he would reprise the opener, "Room Above the Bar," to heartbreaking effect in an a cappella version on his solo acoustic outing Songs of Love: Live in London.
