  The Stranglers
The Stranglers were unusually tuneful with a unique sound based on a growling base and swirling keyboards.
Along with this the Stranglers added aggression, their intellect oand a playful sense of deliberately provoking reaction.
Sadly The Stranglers have never been given the credit they deserve, largely being forgotten in books written about this time by the same journalists who pilloried them or being summarily dispatched as karate kicking, organ grinding violent / sexists.

The Stranglers formed as the Guildford Stranglers in the southern England village of Chiddington (near Guildford) in 1974, plowing a heavily Doors-influenced furrow through the local pub rock scene -- such as it was.
Unfortunately, though the Stranglers themselves reveled in an almost Monty Python-esque grasp of absurdity (and, in particular, the absurdities of modern "men's talk"), there was an undercurrent of violence which not only permeated their music, it also, inevitably, spilled into their live shows.
That it is those earliest years which remain the Stranglers' most popular is not surprising -- from bad-mannered yobs to purveyors of supreme pop delicacies, the group was responsible for music which may have been ugly and might have been crude -- but it was never, ever boring.

  Falk's Faves - The Stranglers
The Stranglers' early work is most properly described as stripped-down pop played with a hardcore sensibility; fairly lengthy songs with frequent solo breaks, prominent keyboard usage, and occasional employment of vocal harmony sets them apart from their peers.
As were their contemporaries the Vibrators, the Stranglers were faux-punks; grimy, slightly arty rockers that found the notoriety surrounding punk bands too irresistible to ignore.
The Stranglers offered no sense of outrage (despite being outrageous) or unpredictability, every moved seemed calculated, as if it were an approximation of a punk aesthetic.

I came late to The Stranglers - both to the music, having got to love them through a (shock, horror) "best of" album, and to the gig (whoever heard of a rock band - let alone an erstwhile punk rock band - being on stage at the allotted hour?).
So front man Paul Roberts was already glistening with sweat underneath his open fl shirt as he writhed and contorted a very trim body to the anthemic strains of Always The Sun, and this 25th Anniversary gig was well under way.
However raw early Stranglers could be, there was always a surprising musicality behind it, usually the result of Greenfield's inspired keyboards.

Black and White was previewed by the hits "Five Minutes" and "Nice'n'Sleazy" (self-mythology in a nutshell), and was swiftly followed by one of the band's finest moments, a murderously slowed-down version of Bacharach/David's "Walk on By."
