  Beno Gutenberg biography
As a student, he chose geophysics as his field of endeavor and joined the Geophysical Institute, newly established by Emil Wiechert, a pioneer in the emerging science of seismology.
He chaired many committees and sections in the International Union for Geodesy and Geophysics, served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Seismological Society of America, and was a foreign member of the Academia dei Lance and the Royal Society of New Zealand.
He was awarded the Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union in 1933, the Lagrange Prize of the Royal Belgian Academy in 1950, the Wiechert Medal of the Deutsche Geophysikalische Gegellschaft, and an honorary degree from the University of Uppsala in 1955.

While at the Nobel Institute, Alfvén became increasingly interested in the acceleration of charged particles to high energies, and especially to the extreme energies of cosmic rays.
Alfvén accepted a professorship at the University of California, San Diego, in 1967 and he divided his time so that he was at the Royal Institute "from the Vernal Equinox until the Autumnal Equinox" and at the University of California from fall until spring.

From 1907 to 1910, Boris Rosing and his student Vladimir Zworykin demonstrated a Television system that used a mechanical mirror-drum scanner in the transmitter and the electronic Braun tube (cathode ray tube) in the receiver.
(Today's CRT technology allows the manufacture of much wider tubes, and the flat screen technologies which are becoming steadily more popular have no aspect ratio limitations at all.) In the 1950s, movie studios moved towards widescreen aspect ratios such as Cinerama in an effort to distance their product from television.
In the US, the National Institute on Media and the Family (not a government agency) points out that US children watch an average of 25 hours of Television per week and features studies showing it interferes with the educational and maturational process.

New York's Royal Governor William Tryon, appointed to the position in 1771, is forced to leave New York City and stay on a British warship anchored in the harbor.
