The Subtle Knife - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Subtle Knife is the second novel in the His Dark Materials series, written by British novelist Philip Pullman, and published in 1997.
The Subtle Knife of the title was forged 300 years previously in the Torre degli Angeli at CittĂ gazze, and has the power to cut any material in the various universes, as well as the ability to allow the Bearer to cut through the barriers between universes.
The Knife has the ability to cut into other worlds; in other words, it was the Knife that created the windows Will and Lyra had been walking through.

The Subtle Knife is the middle book of a trilogy, and it depends very much on what came before -- and even more so on the promise of what is to come.
The Subtle Knife does further the story as a whole, bringing in Will and the knife, but it's clearly only the middle chapters of a larger story and doesn't stand very strongly on its own, requiring the foundation laid out before -- and the resolution to come -- to be worthwhile.

Will Parry is a character created by Philip Pullman for his novels The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass which together with Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in the USA) complete the trilogy called His Dark Materials.
Spoiler warning: Dust in Philip Pullmans trilogy of novels His Dark Materials is a fictional form of dark matter (as we call it in our world), an elementary particle that is of fundamental importance to the novels.
Indeed, many sinister men often pester his mentally ill mother for information on his father (who was obviously doing something extremely significant before being lost), and on many occasions, Will has had to fend them off.

 Philip Pullman:  The Subtle Knife
In The Subtle Knife, Pullman expands on the idea of multiple worlds, revealing that Lyra’s world was only one of myriad worlds existing simultaneously with certain amounts of similarities.
The Subtle Knife, even more than The Golden Compass, is a dark story due to the fact that, for all their abilities, Will and Lyra and the other children are seen as tools to be used by adults, whether the adults are nominally good or evil.
The Subtle Knife, unfortunately, lacks the semi-conclusion found in the first novel, leaving too many threads open to be read as a stand-alone novel, and suffers from a case of middle-book syndrome as Pullman sets up his world for the denouement in The Amber Spyglass.

The Subtle Knife verges on Science Fiction in its speculative underpinnings.
But there are very clear hints that he also believes a balance must be struck: his narrative focus is on the striving, unhubristic Lyra and Will, not on their ambitious parents; and the Spectre-afflicted world seems very much like an Eden destroyed by the alchemic meddling that created the subtle knife.
