		The Subtle Knife is the second novel in the His Dark Materials series, written by British novelist Philip Pullman, and published in 1997.
		The Subtle Knife of the title was forged 300 years previously in the Torre degli Angeli at Cittàgazze, and has the power to cut any material in the various universes, as well as the ability to allow the Bearer to cut through the barriers between universes.
		The Knife has the ability to cut into other worlds; in other words, it was the Knife that created the windows Will and Lyra had been walking through.
