Game said the scheduled launch of the new handheld PSP by electronics giant Sony in September would benefit its second half, while the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were expected to make a significant contribution when they are released next year.

The Suffering - Xbox (XB) Review - The Armchair Empire
The Suffering is at its scary best while you are inside the prison and in the asylum outside the prison grounds, and having everything dark and fog-covered just adds more bloodcurdling drama to the overall mood of the game.
Although you can play the game in either first-person or third-person perspective (the default setting is third-person), I played the entire game in third-person because it was much easier to gauge the placement of enemies, particularly when you where under attack from a multitude of crazed killing creatures at once.
The Suffering isn’t as good an action game as it is a horror game, but despite some stumbles in its composition it still provides some incredible horror and scare moments that only a rare few games have been able to bestow to the horror genre.

 The Suffering Review - GamersHell.com
The Suffering is essentially about you fighting your way out of the prison, exploring the bizarre island of Carnate (located somewhere in Maryland), beating the crap out of whatever evil things you find and maybe even unraveling the truth about yourself and your past.
The Suffering has a significantly more “twisted” feel to it than for instance Max Payne, which is very much evident in the amount of blood, limbs all over the place, decapitation, electrocution, lethal injections, and much, much more.
When you play the game and encounter a new monster, or enter a new section of the island these two books will be filled with text and photos, explaining some of the history and interesting facts.

Game Over Online Magazine - The Suffering: Ties That Bind   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Torque, the “hero” of the Suffering series, is one such example: a man whose crimes constantly haunt him no matter where he goes.
The previous Suffering game let you determine how good, neutral or evil Torque was as he fought his way through Abbott by saving or murdering innocents and bystanders; this time around, these choices change his attacks and the look of the inner creature itself, which makes every choice important.
Sure, it expands on the story of the previous game, and as an expansion pack would be somewhat adequate, but it doesn’t innovate or redesign anything to make it stand out from its predecessor’s shadow.

Gamasutra - Features - "Postmortem: The Game Design of Surreal's The Suffering" - printer friendly
Midway was quite happy with the game's progress and had seen a strong reaction to it from the press and public alike.
For example, the game's design did not originally plan for the real-time scenes involving Torque's wife and children to be in the game, since we did not have time to build them from an art standpoint.
One of the drawbacks of setting a game in a real-world environment is that you don't have the opportunity for weapon diversity that you do in a science fiction or fantasy game.

DailyGame Review: The Suffering [PS2] [Xbox]
The game opens with Torque being led to his new cell on death row at Abbott State Penitentiary, an island-based prison where the baddest of the bad go to die.
The game is pretty good at giving you a lot of targets to shoot at, and as a result, you'll usually have more than enough ammo to deal with any situation, though the higher difficulty settings do toughen things up a bit.
While the game is good at giving you plenty of monster-shooting action, it also really could have used either some more tactics for monsters or more varied types of monsters.

While cutscenes presented in the game are scattered through the game for specific purposes, there are a couple of moments, particularly when Torque views some supernatural vision that are eerily (and nicely) done.
Secondly, while the camera work in The Suffering is some of the best found within a horror game, the game offers an option to switch between first and third person viewpoints.
Problems aside, however, The Suffering is one of those games that’s a surprising twist to the horror genre.

The Gamers Temple - The Suffering Review - Page 1
Occasionally, though, a game does come along to remind you of how much fun it is to find yourself in the middle of a scary story – especially when you get to shoot back at the monsters.
The game slowly and deliberately builds the tension as you try to get out of your cell block rather than simply throwing monsters at you and it is this approach that makes The Suffering fun to play.
This is one of those games you’ll want to play at night with the lights out, but I wouldn’t play it for too long right before bed unless someone warm and cuddly will be waiting there for you.

 IGN: The Suffering Review
Touted as an action horror game, The Suffering is the story of Torque, a man sentenced to death for slaughtering his family.
The game is not without its problems—voice acting is spotty, textures are sometimes weak and the frame rate can be suspect at times—but overall The Suffering succeeds as both a horrific thrill ride and fun action experience.
As we've mentioned, the main idea behind the game is survival in a grueling environment full of phantasmagorical creatures, and the emphasis is on action.

The Suffering’s genius lies in it’s ability to build tension and keep on building it so that you never have the chance to wonder what the hell that was back in that room!
Again, this transformation into a super-being is not a new concept, but developer Riot has skillfully woven together all of these tried and true game play concepts, along with superb atmospheric effects, to create a game that could necessitate the use of adult diapers.
Combining excellent atmospheric effects with creepy CG sequences and superb game play, The Suffering is easily one the best and most surprising horror titles to come along since Fatal Frame, and it’s the first game since the original Silent Hill that may cause spontaneous incontinence and liberal use of the word (expletive).

 The Suffering - Xbox Game
The Suffering is an all-new next-generation entry in the survival horror genre, and the first game of its kind to probe the very unsettling and seedy underbelly of a maximum-security penitentiary, which is haunted by horrific and grotesque apparitions, all represented by the unique and disturbing executions that previously befell them.
Gamers take on the role of Torque, an inmate who must face much more than his own inner demons and the harsh and gritty reality of death row as he fights to escape the unleashing of the penitentiary's gruesome secrets in what amounts to a challenge more terrifying than fighting death itself.
The Suffering features ultra-mature content and three distinctly different endings dependent upon how you choose to survive.

As the game progresses, the player is forced to make a number of different moral choices, ultimately determining Torque's guilt or innocence in the involvement of the slaughter he was convicted of.
The original game ended with Torque finally escaping from Carnate Island as either a wrongly accused man or a heartless killer, depending on the moral path the player chose.
In fact, players with a save file from the original game will be treated to a different opening sequence, determined by the path chosen in the first game.

You know, considering how good The Suffering was (in terms of the story and the cinematic appeal), there is a remote chance that the movie might not entirely suck.

Ties That Bind is the sequel to Surreal Studios' action horror game where players take the role of Torque, a badass that likes big guns and knows how to use them on the horrors that manifest themselves in our world as creatures of wanton destruction.

Problem number two is that problem number one isn't all that important right now, because the island prison where he has been sent to die is under attack by hordes of hideous monsters.
By nature, action-horror games follow a set convention—monsters emerge from unexpected locales, grim flashbacks haunt the protagonist, bloody combat dominates the screen.
The Suffering does all of this—only breaking from the prescribed genre to offer a bit more action than the typical crawl of horror.
