The Superjesus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Superjesus is a rock band from Adelaide, Australia.
Lead singer and main song-writer Sarah McLeod formed the band in late 1994 with guitarist (and her guitar teacher at the time) Chris Tennent, drummer Paul Berryman and bass player Stuart Rudd.
They were originally called Hell's Kitchen before changing their name to The Superjesus on the eve of the 1994 Big Day Out in Adelaide.

 About the Superjesus
The early sound of the Superjesus is described by Sarah as being "heavier" with more metal-type riffs with an early metal influence.
The Superjesus first obtained national recognition with frequent airplay of Shut my Eyes on the national radio station JJJ, plus some airplay on the independent RRR in Melbourne.
Now The Superjesus generally headline their own show, with support from a number of other local bands, a big change from their early days.

The Superjesus' frontwoman Sarah McLeod's fast-talking, down-to-earth and bubbly personality is effective in putting anyone at ease.
She talks openly and honestly about her soon-to-be-released single So Lonely, and the strife of releasing a single that's so honest and stylistically different from anything they've done in the past So Lonely is due for release on February 9.
The Superjesus are now working on a new album, but McLeod says its too early to say exactly what's in store for their listeners.

 Radio National The Deep End
Adelaide band The Superjesus have been on the Australian rock scene for 10 years.
They’ve built their reputation on a rocking live show and earned their musical stripes by playing live, at both festivals and pubs here at home and in Europe, the UK and America.
They lost their guitarist and it looked like the band would split, but The Superjesus join the Deep End to play a couple of new songs from their latest album Rock Music.

On the first night of the Intel New York Music Festival, Australia's the Superjesus are set to warm up the audience for legendary headliners, The Jesus and Mary Chain.
But all eyes are on the diminutive woman whose pixie haircut flies in her face as she prowls about the stage, a guitar strapped across her chest, her voice soaring and swooping with the music.
Virtually unknown in America but already platinum-selling festival headliners at home, the Superjesus, (lead guitarist, Chris Tennent -- McLeod's former guitar teacher, Stuart Rudd on bass and Paul Berryman on drums) are in the midst of a six month stay in the US, promoting their Warner Bros. debut, Sumo, released in June.

Fifteen minutes later the audience of 20 is giving The Superjesus the equivalent of a standing ovation after they've demolished the stately interior of the Capitol Theatre in Sydney with a final rip roaring, smashing, fedback, slash'n'burn take on their anthem, Down Again.
Welcome to the band that doesn't give a toss about being stars, that just wants to rip the guts out of their instruments and blow a giant hole in the fairy floss of rock'n'roll.
All this was mostly conceived in Chris's lounge, on Sarah's bike and in her car, and in the closet of Stuart and Paul's hotel bedroom in Atlanta near the studios where The Superjesus ended up recording Sumo with brilliant young US producer, Matt Serletic.

At the time I wrote it I was listening to a lot of Swervedriver and it's kind of a homage to one of the songs on Ejector Seat Reservation.
I think one of the points about The Superjesus that gives it an original sound is that the rhythm section and guitars aren't just pumping out a solid 4/4 beat with vocals over the top.

The Superjesus debuted to good reviews in 1996 with the EP Eight Step Rail.
The songwriting of vocalist/guitarist Sarah McLeod and guitarist Chris Tennent was undeniably strong, and their wall of guitar noise (somewhat reminiscent of Siamese Dream-era Smashing Pumpkins) made them an overnight success on Australian radio.
Sounding like a cross between Liz Phair and Catatonia's Cerys Matthews, McLeod's voice was a major drawcard; strong, confident and rarely lapsing into the girlishness that characterized some of the Superjesus' contemporaries.
