  The Surfaris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Surfaris were an American surf music band formed in California in 1962.
They are best known for two songs that hit the charts in the Los Angeles area, and nationally by May, 1963: "Surfer Joe" on the A side and "Wipe Out" on the B side of a 45 RPM single.
The Surfaris disbanded in 1966 but have periodically reunited and are still active as of 2004, performing and recording, often re-recording their old songs.

The Surfaris' recording contract was about to expire so it made sense to disband the group.
We each had other interests at this point and together as a group we didn't feel we could create the same magic in a different style of music, as we were being pressured to do by our management and record companies.
The Surfaris were the best band around the San Gabriel Valley area, and their popularity grew rapidly.

In 1991 the Surfaris were inducted into the Surf Music Walk of Fame at Euro Disneyland (France) with six other groups.
They now appear in the Encyclopedia Britannica as “…the Surfaris (whose “Wipe Out” featured the most identifiable drum solo in rock history).” They are also featured in the Encarta Encyclopedia 2001 edition with a sound file specimen of “Wipe Out” identified as a prime example of California surf music of the 60’s.
In August of 2001 they were featured in a front-page story of the Wall Street Journal which exposed Morton Downey, Jr., and others who have falsely claimed to have been involved with the Surfaris in the past.
