Because the Sword had not been there, Allanon realized that the only hope for the Four Lands now was to prepare for the oncoming war; thus, he sent Durin and Dayel to the Westland, Hendel to the Eastland, Balinor to Callahorn, and with Menion and Flick he went to search for the missing Shea.
According to Allanon, he was heir to the Sword of Shannara and the last descendent of Jerle Shannara - the other heirs were killed by Skull Bearers, and it was only because he was half-Elven that they did not catch him.
Afterward, Shea told Panamon and Keltset the story of Allanon and his quest for the Sword of Shannara, and from then on they were committed to his cause and resolved to retrieve the Sword.

No doubt there were flaws in writing that Brooks possessed in 1977 when he wrote Sword, like the switching point of view issues and the hanging loose ends—things that he learned how to change in later writings.
But in spite of it, Brooks drew me into Sword of Shannara and his characters with little difficulty.

The result is this extremely long-winded epic trilogy called The Sword of Shannara.
The Sword of Shannara is a tedious page-turner about two young men (one is a half elf and the other is pretty short, much like hobbits) who find themselves on a quest for a powerful ancient sword.
Even though this novel is slightly shorter than the first Lord of the Rings book, The Sword of Shannara packs much less punch.

The worst part, though, is the artistic blunder that Brooks makes in describing how this magic works; apparently it only works if you really, really believe in it.
So now, unless it is held by a son of the House of Shannara, that person can never fully believe in his right to use it...so it will not operate." Whatever.
All this mess over the explanation of magic isn't really that prominent in the book, since magic doesn't play a central role for most of the novel -- except that the characters are all trying to get said Sword to destroy the Warlock Lord.

Review of Terry Brooks' The Sword of Shannara by Craig Stalbaum
Briefly summarized, The Sword of Shannara is a story of two naðve, young brothers living in a small village in the southernmost region of the world.
As mentioned earlier, one of the unusual features of The Sword of Shannara is that it takes place on the planet earth„nearly every other major work of modern fantasy is set upon a far distant world with multiple races and different cultures.
In Shannara, somewhere in the distant past the race of man (modern humans) destroyed each other in a vast apocalyptic conflict, and thus the only remaining populations were very spread out across the globe and unable to contact one another.
