The Synthesis of Yoga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Synthesis of Yoga is Sri Aurobindo's principle work on yoga, comparing the methods of the various schools of traditional yoga, and providing the comprehensive way for following the true path to Divine consciousness.
Synthesis on Yoga is divided into four parts: the Yoga of Divine Works, of Integral Knowledge, of Divine Love, and of Self Perfection.
In 1972 The Synthesis of Yoga was published as Volumes 20 and 21 of the Sri Aurobindo Birth Centenary Library (SABCL); a popular edition that was reprinted many times.

Integral yoga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Integral yoga or purna yoga (Sanskrit for full or complete yoga) refers in Sri Aurobindo's teachings to the union of all the parts of one's being with the Divine, and the transmutation of all of their jarring elements into a harmonious state of higher divine consciousness and existence.
As the title of that work indicates, his integral yoga is a yoga of synthesis, intended to harmonize the paths of karma, jnana, and bhakti yoga as described in the Bhagavad Gita.
In Integral Yoga, the goal is not only a transcendent liberation, nirvana, or moksha as in other spiritual paths, but also, in addition to that, the realisation of the Divine in the physical world as well.

"The Synthesis of Yoga", Introduction, Ch. 5
But in the end, as is the general tendency of Prakriti, Tantric Yoga largely lost its principle in its machinery and became a thing of formulae and occult mechanism still powerful when rightly used but fallen from the clarity of their original intention.
The passage from the lower to the higher is the aim of Yoga; and this passage may effect itself by the rejection of the lower and escape into the higher, - the ordinary view-point, - or by the transformation of the lower and its elevation to the higher Nature.
Thus we would arrive at a synthesis of the three degrees of Nature and of the three modes of human existence which she has evolved or is evolving.

In a sense, all the other schools are Vedantic in their principle; their force is in knowledge—if not through discernment by the intellect then through the knowledge of the heart expressed in love and faith, or a knowledge in the will expressed through action.
But in the end, as is the general tendency of prakriti, tantric yoga largely lost its principle in its machinery and became a thing of formulae and occult mechanism.
We see the divine method to be the same in the lower and in the higher working; only in the one it is pursued tardily and obscurely through the subconscious in nature, in the other it becomes swift and self-conscious and the instrument confesses the hand of the master.

 Integral Yoga - Integral Wiki
Integral Yoga takes the essence of hatha yoga, pranayama, raja yoga, tantra, vedanta and other yogic disciplines, and shows how the results of each one can be achieved by cutting to the root of the process that each one facilitates.
Thus one of the main elements of integral yoga practice, is the combined action of Karma Yoga (yoga of divine works), Jnana Yoga (yoga of divine knowledge) and Bhakti Yoga (yoga of divine love).
The other main element is the practice of Siddha Yoga (yoga of self-perfection), which Sri Aurobindo described using a system he called the Sapta Chatusthaya, or Seven Tetrads.

The Synthesis of Yoga, Sri Aurobindo
Indian Yoga, in its essence a special action or formulation of certain great powers of Nature, itself specialised, divided and variously formulated, is potentially one of these dynamic elements of the future life of humanity.
Yoga, as Swami Vivekananda has said, may be regarded as a means of compressing one's evolution into a single life or a few years or even a few months of bodily existence.
No synthesis of Yoga can be satisfying which does not, in its aim, reunite God and Nature in a liberated and perfected human life or, in its method, not only permit but favour the harmony of our inner and outer activities and experiences in the divine consummation of both.
