  KFTH - Teen Idles Page
The roots of the Teen Idles and DC hardcore lie in a group of skaters from Wilson High School in DC.
The Teen Idles also found little sympathy from the existing local punk scene and music press who dubbed the band and their fans "teeny punks".
Following the Teen Idles demise Nathan formed the short-lived Youth Brigade (not to be confused with the LA band of the same name) while Ian and Jeff formed Minor Threat.

The remainder of The Slinkees - Ian, Jeff, and Geordie Grindle (guitarist) - got a new singer (Nathan Strejcek) and formed The Teen Idles in September, 1979.
At this point, Ian and Jeff helped form Dischord Records, and The Teen Idles recorded their first release, an EP entitled "Minor Disturbance".
Carrying over from the Teen Idles, Ian MacKaye and Minor Threat continued to spearhead the "Straight Edge" ideology of abstinence from intoxication and loose sex as a vehicle of sober and intelligent rebellion against the countless social norms that stuck them as idiotic.

Teen Idles, label co-owner Ian MacKaye (later of Fugazi) and Jeff Nelson's band before Minor Threat, released the first Dischord single in 1980.
This is Teen Idles as a punk band, at merely really fast tempos, before they opted for the blinding thrash rush that (along with the Untouchables and S.O.A., led by Henry Rollins when he was Henry Garfield) led to such speeds becoming the stupid staple of hardcore.
Like their then-D.C. friends the Bad Brains (as heard on the Black Dots demos LP from that time), only half as good, Teen Idles were actually a budding punk pleasure in their pre-hardcore days.

The Teen Idles founded Dischord Records in 1980 with the release of the "Minor Disturbance" 8-song 7" Dischord #1, so it seemed appropriate to celebrate Dischord's 100th release with a second single from the band 16 years later.
This record consists of songs taken from practice tapes and early demos recorded in late 1979 to mid-1980.
The Teen Idles certainly didn't intend to start a label, only to put out a record, but it was a decision that led to at least 16 years of new bands and releases and the documentation of a community here in Washington DC."
