The Tennessean, Nashville's primary daily newspaper, traces its roots back to the Nashville Whig, a weekly paper that began publication on September 1, 1812.
Tennessean reporters Nat Caldwell and Gene Graham won a Pulitzer Prize in 1962 "[f]or their exclusive disclosure and six years of detailed reporting, under great difficulties, of the undercover cooperation between management interests in the coal industry and the United Mine Workers." In the same year, John Seigenthaler was named editor of the newspaper.

Nashville's big daily newspaper, The Tennessean, is suing a small daily in suburban Rutherford County because the small Daily News Journal used the letters "A.M." in the title of a promotional mailing, and the company that publishes The Tennessean plans to launch a zoned edition called "Rutherford A.M." The big paper is claiming trademark infringement.
In 1992, a federal Court of Appeals ruled against Bristol-Myers Squibb, the makers of Excedrin PM, which had argued that the maker of Tylenol PM was not entitled to use the "PM" term to describe its medication.
In her memorandum, Chancellor Lyle explained that The Tennessean's proof of trademark infringement "falls short at this preliminary stage." Lyle wrote that she issued the injunction against both papers until a September hearing, because the Nashville daily nevertheless offered some compelling evidence.

I’ve cancelled my subscription to The Tennessean after their absurdly partisan endorsement of John Kerry on Sunday.
Kerry continues to spout an unbelievable lie: that Bush told us that the war would be “a piece of cake.” The Tennessean not only ignores the facts, but chooses to perpetuate Kerry’s lie.
Since it isn’t, and since The Tennessean has once again trashed their journalistic credibility with this endorsement, I can no longer justify supporting them with my subscription.
