William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles in "The Thin Man." The Charles' playful, bantering relationship is loads of fun in the original 1934 film and the five that followed.
I saw "The Thin Man" for the first time at the Neptune (if memory serves) about 20 years ago and fell hopelessly in love with it; since then, I've probably watched it a few dozen more times.

With The Thin Man, Loy would permanently puncture her image as "bad girl" with her sprightly handling of the comic material, along with Powell's deft turn in both the comic and more serious aspects of the story (although after the third film the serious aspects would be pared down).
In The Thin Man (1934, 91 mins.), when gold-digger Julia Wolf is murdered, and her boyfriend, inventor and "thin man" Clyde Wynant disappears, Nick Charles, who has retired from sleuthing to rest on his wife's money, is pressed into play by Wynant's daughter, Dorothy (Maureen O'Sullivan).
Another Thin Man offers one of the strongest stories of the series, and one of the funniest as well: i.e., when one of the policemen questioning Nora tells her the names of some of Nick's former girlfriends, she starts using their names as aliases.

Now, neither Nick nor Nora Charles were actually the Thin Man--that was the bad guy in Hammett's book--but the name quickly became linked with Nick and Nora, just as Powell and Loy, both stars in their own rights, became irrevocably linked with the Thin Man movie franchise.
Of course, an advanced civilization would not subject an unconscious man to operation via electronic rays because the subject was "not perfect." If the 1998 reader needed any reminding that the Thin Man was the creation of a very different time and place, that little moment would provide it.

That's certainly the case in "The Thin Man" (1934), a murder mystery in which the murder and the mystery are insignificant compared to the personal styles of the actors.
That "The Thin Man" cost so little and looks so good is possibly because the interiors are simple and elegant, and the fl and white photography flatters the loungewear and formalwear worn by a great-looking cast (which in addition to Powell and Loy, included Maureen O'Sullivan and a young Cesar Romero).
Although Dashiell Hammett was known for hard-boiled fiction, and John Huston's 1941 film of Hammett's The Maltese Falcon was one of the first examples of film noir, "The Thin Man" is essentially a drawing-room comedy with dead bodies.

The other characters in The Thin Man, while they could have just been window dressing for Powell and Loy, given their inflated screen presence's, are just the opposite: well crafted and distinctive characters.
However, it was the perfect husband/wife relationship that caused The Thin Man to become such a commercial success that it generated an amazing five sequels, all of which had Powell and Loy reprising their roles as the Charles'.
The only thing that prevented The Thin Man from capturing the 'Perfect Whodunit' title, was its occasionally unfocused examination of the crime at hand, but, as it stands, is still a wonderfully enjoyable film to see.

THE THIN MAN is a landmark film in so many ways that it is difficult to over-estimate either its impact or its brilliance.
However, in the original novel and in this movie the Thin Man refers to Clyde Wynant, a somewhat absent-minded inventor, the chief suspect in what turns out to be three murders, and someone who only actually appears in the first 15 minutes of the film, never to be seen afterwards.

Also appearing in the film were Maureen O'Sullivan, Nat Pendleton, Minna Gombell, Cesar Romero, Porter Hall, Henry Wadsworth, William Henry, Harold Huber and Natalie Moorhead.
The "Thin Man" of the title was actually the lead suspect, but the name was thought by virtually everyone to refer to Nick Charles, and it was used in the titles of the sequels, although no one ever called him that.
