The Thing from Another World - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Thing from Another World is a 1951 science fiction film which tells the story of an Air Force crew and scientists at a remote Arctic research outpost who fight an alien being.
The screenplay changes the fundamental nature of the alien as presented in Campbell's short story: Lederer's "Thing" is a humanoid monster whose cellular structure is closer to vegetation although it must feed on blood to survive.
In another episode, Martin Prince uses the line to end his nomination speech for class president, in which he promises a science fiction library for the class.

Led by Captain Hendry (Kenneth Tobey), the crew is greeted by a chilling Artic air, which serves as an omen of "things" to come.
Another controversy at the time, actually came out of the sci-fi community.
In Campbell's novella and accurately recreated in John Carpenter's "The Thing", the alien would use it's ability to shape-shift in an attempt to defeat it's newest enemy.

Movie-Monsters - The Thing From Another World
One of the first things that becomes apparent with The Thing from Another World is that it's full of enjoyable characters.
When the journalist gives his report to the rest of the world on the radio near the end there is a charming concession to Dr Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite) that plays down his mistakes and is a touch of human kindness that most modern films wouldn't think to include.
The Thing From Another World is a fairly fast paced story too, it gets down to business pretty quickly and what follows seems to be over far sooner than the 87 minutes running time.

Another round of wild speculation follows and they decided to get axes and chop the frozen alien out of the ice before the approaching storm makes it impossible to fly.
Another quick montage shows the plane landing and the group moving the large chunk of ice containing the alien towards the compound.
The Thing From Another World is unique in that it utilizes both these approaches in it’s story, and doesn’t vilify either side, though it does tend to side a wee bit more with the militaristic method of handling the situation.

 The Thing From Another World
The Thing From Another World (1951, US) is one of the first films to express a fear of being taken overtaken by unknown visitors.
The Thing's real threat lies in that it reproduces asexually using seeds, so only one creature is needed to begin colonization of an entire planet.
He is forced to destroy them, as their threat to humanity outweighs the value of any knowledge attained by studying them.

The Thing From Another World was produced by Howard Hawks and bears his trademark creative stamp: a small group of researchers and military men recover a crashed flying saucer in the Arctic, out of which comes the Thing, an unstoppable alien bent on world domination.
Scoring The Thing From Another World was Dimitri Tiomkin, one of cinema's most famous composers, who nonetheless was known for his popular melodies rather than an aptitude at science fiction.
Master tapes to The Thing From Another World are long lost, but the complete score survived on monaural acetate transfer disks in Tiomkin's personal collection, and that source has been used for this premiere CD.

And You Call Yourself a Scientist! - The Thing (From Another World) (1951)
When The Thing was released, many in the science fiction community threw up their hands in despair at the realisation that Campbell’s intelligent, telepathic, shape-shifting invader had been reduced to an out-and-out movie monster.
The Thing ends with one of science fiction cinema’s most famous speeches, as the reporter Ned Scott urges his compatriots to “Keep watching the skies!” It is unlikely that anyone in the audience had much doubt about who they were supposed to be watching out for.

Yet regardless of the principal author's identity, what's most remarkable about The Thing (which was remade in 1982 by John Carpenter) is its continued ability to function as both a taut science-fiction thriller and a telling snapshot of the Cold War paranoia beginning to sweep the country in post-WWII America.
Carrington deduces that the Thing feels no emotional or sexual pleasure and, thus, is "our superior in every way," while Captain Hendry sees the visitor as merely a monster bent on harvesting the planet for mankind's blood.
The Thing From Another World's titular vegetable creature may not have the cache of a Freddy or Jason, but there's no denying that this chilling Hawks production is a must-see for science fiction and horror aficionados.

Another rumor that is almost certainly untrue is that Orson Welles contributed some dialogue to the screenplay.
Filming on The Thing started on October 25, 1950, at RKO soundstages (one of which had been used for Citizen Kane, 1941) with an A-level budget set at $1.3 million (later to increase to $1.6 million).
But the original version of The Thing is also a landmark film in many ways and says much about the psychological state of the nation in the fifties when flying saucers were a popular topic as well as a threat.

THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD...the title conjures up lurid images from the countless 'B' SciFi flicks of the 50s, but as many SF, Howard Hawks, and Classic Cinema fans can attest, this is no sleazy schlockfest, but one of the most entertaining and exciting films ever made, by one of Hollywood's greatest directors.
Note: I remember people referring to the Thing (played by James Arness, who avoids monster makeup as the heroic FBI agent in another classic 50's sci-fi film, "Them!") as the "carrot monster" movie because the creature is more like a sentient vegetable than any animal.
Another great thing about this film is that the romantic subplot is one of the most unromantic subplots in movie history, having to do mostly with what may or may not have been said during a drinking engagement on a previous weekend.

Whereas it is the very nature of the science-fiction film to be filled with long, ponderous explanations of the rather incredible things presented, Hawks manages to handle the same material in a wholly realistic and entertaining manner sprinkled with doses of light humor.
Cornthwaite believes the invader to be a superior being and is sympathetic to it because he sees it as an extension of himself—high intellect devoid of emotion, feeling, or pain, the perfect scientist (although the viewer sees it as a violent, rampaging monster that demonstrates little intelligence, only strong survival instincts).
The scientist's intentions are valid and noble—of course, studying the thing would yield valuable information--but his intellectual concerns begin to take over his rational sensibilities and lives are lost because of it.

Hawks was never one to stay in just one genre of filmmaking—from the original gangster film Scarface to the comedy in Bringing Up Baby to the western action in Rio Bravo, Hawks has shown that he was as adept at comedy as he was at horror.

The directorial credits for The Thing From Another World are given to Christian Nyby (who went on to do a lot of television directing, including ironically Gunsmoke), with producer credits going to the legendary Howard Hawks (The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo, Red River).
It has been widely rumored over the years that Hawks himself eventually took over directing duties, and this is generally regarded as a Hawks-directed film through and through, despite it having Nyby's name in the credits; it is Hawks' name that is in large type on the poster art—draw your own conclusion.
One of the underrated sequences of The Thing From Another World, where we do get a somewhat extended early peek, occurs when the alien is doused with kerosene and set ablaze, and it remains as a marvelously frenzied bit of filmmaking.

Cheaply made, with rickety, dated special effects, The Thing From Another World is nonetheless spooky and tense.
It straddles the horror/sci-fi genres with confidence, largely eschewing heavy-handed social commentary (although the idea of men neglecting to attempt to communicate with the alien is typically Hawksian and very much in line with 50s American sci-fi attitudes).
