The Last Command (Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy, Vol. 3)
The embattled Republic reels from the attacks of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has marshaled the remnants of the Imperial forces and driven the Rebels back with an abominable technology recovered from the Emperor's secret fortress: clone soldiers.
As Thrawn mounts his final siege, Han and Chewbacca struggle to form a coalition of smugglers for a last-ditch attack against the empire, while Leia holds the Alliance together and prepares for the birth of her Jedi twins.
To complicate matters, Thrawn's ally, the insane Joruus C'baoth, is a dark Jedi master trying to turn Luke to the dark side and to possess Leia's children, raising them as the seed to a new Jedi army.

Thrawn Trilogy - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki
The Thrawn Trilogy, also known as The Thrawn Omnibus, the Zahn Trilogy, the Empire Trilogy, The Three-Book Cycle, and the Star Wars cycle consists of three novels: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command.
The trilogy follows the campaigns of Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn, from the Battle of Obroa-skai to the Battle of Bilbringi.
Some fans look at the trilogy as the main continuation of the Original Trilogy, and thus the closest replacement for the long-promised, but never produced, sequel trilogy of films.

Star Wars: Thrawn Trilogy Review: Book Series by Timothy Zahn Picks Up From Return of the Jedi
Zahn’s Admiral Thrawn Trilogy is the basis for nearly all of the novels to have come after it, and some that even take place chronologically before it.
Thrawn manages to determine the origin of the madness all clones develop in time.
Since most of the expanded universe content to the Star Wars universe stems in some way from this initial series by Zahn, The Thrawn trilogy is the only proper place for a fan to start their continuing immersion into the phenomenon that is Star Wars.

  The Thrawn Trilogy
The Thrawn trilogy, also known as The Three Book Cycle and The Heir To The Empire trilogy, is a trilogy of novels written by Timothy Zahn that are set in the fictional Star Wars Expanded Universe galaxy about five years after Return of the Jedi.
The trilogy proved to be extremely popular among Star Wars fans and the general public when it was released, and secured the author a position as a respected figure in Star Wars literature.
This is partly because many see the volumes of the Thrawn trilogy as being as well done as the Star Wars films themselves.

 Star Wars by Timothy Zahn
The Thrawn Trilogy is the first group of books that were written after Lucas made his monumental decision.
Back after years of exile on the rim of the galaxy, Thrawn is a formidable foe whose uncanny knack for discerning the plans of his adversaries makes him the most dangerous threat the New Republic has had to face since the death of the Emperor.
They are awaiting Thrawn's call to arms to unleash their military might against an unsuspecting galaxy.

FanFiction.Net - Reviews for Fury of the Admiral
I doubt very much that Grand Admiral Thrawn would tolerate being called son by an officer under his command, regardless of their respective ages because it is bad for discipline and is disrespectful.
This makes it unlikely that Thrawn's technicians would be able to produce one, especially a complex double-bladed one.
Bringing Thrawn back without any explanation to how he avoided death in "The Last Command" is enough of a stretch.

Carpe Datum: Zahn's Star Wars Books
The first such book I ever saw was Alan Dean Foster's "Splinter of the Mind's Eye", which I believe was first published before "Empire" came out in 1980 (even though Luke, Leia and Vader appear in the novel, there's no reference to family ties or Vader even thinking Luke or Leia have special significance).
Much like you would find in the works of Lois McMaster Bujold, the plots and battles between Thrawn and the good guys are like elaborate chess matches, each side trying to set traps and counter-traps for the other, with lots of surprises thrown in.
Thrawn is trying to rally and rebuild the Empire, and he's offering people a sense of order and continuity.

Star Wars: Expanded Universe | Endnotes for The New Essential Chronology
Heir to the Empire, the first book in the Thrawn Trilogy, began with introducing readers to The Depredations of Grand Admiral Thrawn.
In this first book, Thrawn gathered Joruus C'baoth, the Spaarti cloning cylinders, and the cloaking device for his brilliant master plan.
It should be noted that the Thrawn Trilogy was also adapted into comic book format from Dark Horse Comics.

Fewer folks know the alien Grand Admiral Thrawn, but this high-ranking Imperial officer is the most widely recognized villain produced by the world of Star Wars spin-off literature.
I think Thrawn has the luxury of being largely written by a single writer, Timothy Zahn in the Thrawn Trilogy, and thus avoids the more sensationalistic characterizations of Grievous that have emerged as a result of appearing more or less simultaneously in almost every entertainment medium.
When Thrawn finally loses in the last book of the Thrawn Trilogy, he of course dies.
