  Foster on Film - Swashbucklers
Unlike Film Noir, which had to wait till the mood was right and the techniques were developed to come into existence, Swashbucklers were ready to go as soon as there was film.
The Three Musketeers is so omnipresent in film history that anyone interested in Swashbucklers should see some version of it.
It is a sad film, as it should be.

Heston also starred in various science fiction films and disaster films, some of which, like Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man, Soylent Green, and Earthquake, were hugely successful at the time of their release and have since become cult classics.
In the film, he plays an elderly, dying ape who introduces arms to his species by giving a rifle to another of the planet's inhabitants, perhaps as a nod to his then-current role in the National Rifle Association.
Charlton Heston is the chairman and co-founder of Agamemnon Films.

While the ladies are lovely to look at, their presence causes the rest of the film to suffer.
We are forced to sit through a painfully long lovemaking ruse between Kelly and Turner that's three times as long as the musketeers unrelenting and dangerous ride to Calais, a real show stopper in every other version of the tale.
The stilted flow of the film may be because this version contains the entire story, whereas most others, including the 1973 and 1993 flicks, only tell the first half.

The stars of the film evoke their characters perfectly, from Faye Dunaway as the duplicitous Milady to Oliver Reed as the tortured Athos (a signature role for Reed).
The film is a fabulous blend of comedy and darkness, the two complementing and highlighting each other.

Instead, the producers settled on the closest thing to a perfect cast, for each of the actors playing the Musketeers extracts the sharp individualism of their characters with both class and distinction.
Imaginative set pieces are featured throughout the film, and the action scenes resonate with ferocity (such as the sword fight in the palace laundry and the duel between Athos and a malicious drunk amidst the treacherous mechanisms of a windmill).
The film also addresses the crudeness of 17th-century life (witness the bystander who gets in the way of a chamberpot being dumped from above), yet reminds us that not much has changed since then, for people still love, quarrel, kill and play tennis.

 THE THREEE MUSKETEERS
The film begins with the arrival of D'Artagnan (York), a country boy schooled in the art of swordplay by his father, to the busy streets of Paris, looking for a spot amongst the King's elite musketeers.
He then convinces the King to throw a party in honor of the Queen so that she may be able to show off the necklace he gave her as a present.
The great thing is there's a sequel, THE FOUR MUSKETEERS, that was filmed at the same time, but released a year later, which is almost as good.

 Superman The Movie | Scripts
For any film project that goes into production, the major element that is critical to its completion is the film's screenplay.
When Alexander and Ilya Salkind bought the film rights to "Superman" in 1973-74, their concern was to produce a feature film whose story honored its comic-book origins yet brought then-contemporary audiences a new spin on a classic legend.
Through three separate film treatments the story of both "Superman" and "Superman II" presented a challenge not only to Puzo but also to his successors who would mold and re-mold his story into the final product we all know and love.

When d'Artagnan is arrested and interrogated about the whereabouts of the three musketeers, he overhears plans of the Cardinal's to send a secret treaty to the Duke of Buckingham ("who rules England the way the Cardinal rules France") in an attempt to overthrow the King's rule and claim the crown for himself.
Rescued from the chopping block by the three musketeers, they immediately give chase to the Cardinal's messenger as his henchmen all over the country pursue them to claim the reward for their capture.

The Four Musketeers was filmed concurrently with The Three Musketeers; it was originally intended to be one film, but when director Richard Lester realized the movie would be over three and a half hours long, the decision was made to release it as two separate features instead.
Richard Lester's adaptation of The Three Musketeers was only the latest of many when released in 1974, but it arrived with a spirit all its own, one influenced as much by Lester's '60s work as the Alexandre Dumas classic.

It's up to D'Artagnan and the Musketeers to retrieve the diamonds and prevent the King from discovering his Queen's infidelity, and that means plenty of swashbuckling action.

Barely minutes after setting foot in Paris, the feisty fellow has already challenged three strangers to a duel: luckily for him, they come by the names of Athos (Reed), Porthos (Finlay) and Aramis (Chamberlain).
It's up to D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers to retrieve them.
Unlike other Musketeer outings, 'Flashman' writer MacDonald Fraser's script and dialogue remains pretty faithful to the source material, without tripping over the swordplay (which is refreshingly unshowy and realistic - often a swift kick in the balls will often suffice in the fight scenes).

Lester proceeded to fill The Three Musketeers with some of the most realistic swashbuckling ever committed to film, along with a generous soupçon of slapstick mayhem, a wallow in Italianate neorealism, enough (literal) cloak-and-dagger work to grab and keep the audience’s attention -- and somehow packaged it all into a genuinely warmhearted and majestic film.
Still, lovers of the Musketeers movies could fantasize that they were watching a pristine copy -- at least during those rare moments when they weren’t gripped by the fantastic swordplay (never bettered for reality) or rolling out of their chairs from laughter.
Dumas’s The Three Musketeers was the basis for Lester’s first two Musketeers films, and Lester based The Return of the Musketeers on Dumas’s second volume, Twenty Years Later.

These musketeer types whip out the rapiers at the drop of a chapeau, and it should be said at the outset that the duelling - fairly intrinsic to the beloved tale of 17th century derring-do - is staged with considerable flair and dash.
It embraces the etiquette of the period and the elegance of the clothes, while at the same time indulging in knockabout byplay, with asides to the audience, doubles entendres and a host of anachronisms.

Clark regains his powers and triumphs over the three Kryptonian villains — with the closing scene of Superman reaffirming his commitment to the world to the President — but it's an undeniably bittersweet victory, for it assuredly means the end of his romance with Lois as Superman.
For the life of me, I can't think of a superhero film that ends this ambiguously — there is a sense of real loss when Clark kisses Lois on the cheek one final time, erasing (in a moment of magic realism) her memory of their love affair while he was Superman.

Soon D'Artagnan is stealing hearts and stealing food with equal aplomb as he joins their campaign to defend the queen (Geraldine Chaplin) against a plot devised by the scheming cardinal (Charlton Heston) and his cold-hearted accomplice Milady de Winter (Faye Dunaway).
The film does move along well enough without a full understanding of the details of the plot, but is much better enjoyed if one knows the characters' motivations and goals.
This is best illustrated by the hilarious passageway mutterings of the dwarves (just observed in the previous scene with trays of food fastened to the tops of their heads), with one of the little guys muttering something about punching someone in the throat.
