Sure there were thrills and thrilling things going on here, this has to be one of the epicenters of thrills.
Maybe that’s the problem after all; maybe thrills have to be part of the culture and not part of the plan.
Thrills are to be experienced and if they have to be explained they cease being what they’re supposed to be.

The Thrills: So Much for the City: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Therefore, The Thrills' perplexing geographic origins should ideally remain entirely irrelevant to the stuff of their record: a competent, satisfying pop spread, packed with impeccable vocal harmonies, happy keyboards, jangly guitar, and plenty of fades.
That The Thrills' hometown seems so stupidly anachronistic in the context of their music is-- surprise!-- a perfectly valid quibble: their decision to metaphorically (and, temporarily, physically) transplant themselves might be the only compelling creative choice they made.
The idea of preemptively eschewing all that shit is understandably appealing-- but The Thrills could have thought a bit harder about finding a bright new sound to go with their suddenly sunny locale.

Cheap Thrills, the major-label debut of Janis Joplin, was one of the most eagerly anticipated, and one of the most successful, albums of 1968.
Nobody had ever heard singing as emotional, as desperate, as determined, as loud as Joplin's, and Cheap Thrills was her greatest moment.
Heard today, Cheap Thrills is a musical time capsule and remains a showcase for one of rock's most distinctive singers.

Thrills/City Thrills - Dirty Water - The Boston Rock & Roll Museum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Thrills formed in late 1977, featuring Barbara Kitson (vocals), an Emerson College student who, as a college DJ, was the first to play "Anarchy in the UK" in the States.
They named their band "Thrills" partially in homage to the Clash song "48 Hours" ("48 hours is 48 thrills"), but mostly because of Angel's love of the Lenny Bruce bit which climaxed in, ''grab my thrillhammer, baby", and Kitson nixed "Thrillhammers".
Initially, Thrills were a Ramones/Dead Boys/Blondie like goof band, with silly songs like "Nothing But a Two-Bit Whore" and odes to the joys of assaulting paraplegics, but as they finally found a permanent rhythm section in Mike Collins on drums and Merle Allin on the bass.

Boston Rock Storybook - Thrills aka City Thrills
Barb Kitson was the dynamic front person for the Thrills, one of the staple bands on the Boston scene during the seventies.
The band was later renamed City Thrills due to a copyright issue, and by the start of the 80's they'd become much less hard-edged, moving to a more pop sound.
Perhaps it was due to getting a taste of local airplay, and a desire for more of the same that motivated their increased focus on "serious" songwriting.

An Irish Americana band with a taste for the lighter side of the country-rock/'70s pop-rock spectrum is certainly an anomaly, and not necessarily an appealing one, but the Thrills approach the California myth with a winning guilelessness and plenty of talent.
However, I think that critics who accuse The Thrills of of an overwhelming awareness of their roots are actually responding to the album's considerable loss of momentum towards the second half.
The Thrills are very good at creating very harmonious tunes, and accel at being able to make a song stick in your head.
