Seven Indiana newspapers: The Times of Northwest Indiana; The Indianapolis Star; The Evansville Courier; South Bend Tribune; The Star Press, Muncie; The Tribune Star, Terre Haute and The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne joined together to test the access of state government records in the 92 counties of Indiana.
The task force also asked for time limits to be clarified for public officials responding to requests and automating plaintiff cost payments if a judge finds that public officials are intentionally withholding information that caused the individuals to seek legal action.
Donald G. Asher, editor of "The State of Secrecy" project and editor of The Times of Northwest Indiana, was also thrilled with the response the series received.

Daniel J. Yovich, a reporter for The Times of Northwest Indiana, was arrested last week (4/24) on a pair of four year-old misdemeanor bench warrants by two officers from Sheriff John Buncich's internal affairs office.
According to Yovich's subsequent reporting on the issue, Sheriff Buncich's office didn't tell federal officials that the money was unaccounted for until after Yovich's article was published, more than two weeks after the officer's arrest.
Ongoing investigation and reporting by Yovich and The Times has led to a widening federal investigation of mismanagement and the misappropriation of resources at the Sheriff's task force, as well as to questions of conflicts of interest in the state investigation of the matter.
