Kev's Stephen King House of The Tommyknockers
In an effort to figure out what the thing is, Bobbi begins to scoop out the dirt around it, and in doing so, seals her fate.
Ultimately, The Tommyknockers remains readable and interesting, but unfortunately stands as a bloated shadow to what it could have been.
The Tommyknockers IS too long, and too weighed down by pages of dense exposition that isn't integral to the plot.

If a miner believed in such manifestations, the Tommyknockers would do nothing worse than blow out his lamp, and might even lead him to the mother lode.
Tommyknocker's founders are Tim Lenahan, formerly of the Breckenridge brewery, and Charlie Sturdavant.
Tommyknocker's beers, include a crisp Kšlsch called Fool's Gold; a lemony-tasting wheat ale, Jack Whacker; the malty, Oktoberfest-like, Red Eye Lager, a toffeeish Maple Nut Brown; the pithily hoppy Pick Axe Pale Ale; the eight-percent Butthead Bock, as warming and flavoursome as raspberries in brandy; and the smoky Black Powder Stout.

The Tommyknockers came to California with the Cornishmen in the latter days of the Gold Rush, and there were those who swore they'd seen them then - wizened little men scarcely a foot high who knocked on tiny anvils with hammers the size of darning needles to warn the miners of impending disaster.
When the mules hauled out the ore and a "super" berated a miner for a bad tally, he needed speak only the simple truth: All night long, the Tommyknockers had raised 'ell in the barns, pulling the mules' tails and blowing in their ears.
Now, he could say that when a man spends his life underground, he develops an uncanny sense that warns him of trouble coming, and he could say that the sounds he'd heard were only the old timbers complaining of their terrible burden.

Classic-Horror Review of The Tommyknockers (1993)
The worst offenders are the effects in The Tommyknockers' finale, which features creatures that look like rejects from a more well-respected late 70's film (which I can't name lest I reveal a spoiler) and an extremely choppy, and almost inexcusably gleeful (compared to the novel) ending.
The effects of "the Tommyknockers" on the citizens of Haven (or Haven Falls; the film isn't consistent about the proper name) work as both a parallel to addiction and a metaphor for aging, both of which contain much deep-seated fear for most of us.
Unfortunately, you have to dig a bit for either subtext to make much of a statement, and this is one King film that would have probably worked better with a mega-budget on a big screen.

Well, in my opinion The Tommyknockers is quite simply stunning and one of the very best from The Master, definitely in my top 5 (The Stand, IT, The Shining and The Dead Zone being the others).
Up to that point "The Tommyknockers" is pretty good and I have to admit that I thought the idea of alien technology working into the ancient rubric that there are some things human beings were not meant to tamper with was enough to sustain the story.
This novel represents the start of a period in King's writing where my recurring complaint was that the great set up never resulted in an ending that was equal to the task, although we do have a sort of reverse "deus ex machina" at the end of this one.

The Tommyknockers of the Western Mines
The Tommyknockers were first heard of in the United States when Cornish miners worked in the western Pennsylvania coal mines in the 1820’s.
Later, the legend of the Tommyknockers evolved into the idea that the knockings were caused by dead miners who were kind enough to give warnings of danger to the living.
In some mines, where the Tommyknockers’ presence was known to be overwhelmingly malevolent, the mines were forced to close because of the mens’ fear of the spirits.

Film adaptations of Stephen King novels are seldom as good as the books on which they're based, and really that's not surprising as it must be almost impossible to encompass the depth of history and character that Mr King gets into his novels.
The Tommyknockers is no different from this, and even though it is some time since I read the book, there were blindingly obvious sections of the book that were either changed, missed out or glossed over for ease of bringing the book to the big screen.
